Didn't know where to go and ask so I just came to general. I just tryed my first puzzle from a picture. I glued the picture to the wood then covered it with blue painters tape. I then glued the pattern on and began to cut the puzzle out. My problem is when I remove the painters tape it takes picture too. What am I doing wrong? Should I put something between the picture and the painters tape? All you puzzle pros tell a beginner your secrets.....

Hi Bruce, Not a puzzel pro by any means. Here's what I do. I use cardboard from old cereal boxes. I cut them the same size as the picture-glued-on-wood, then I tape the whole thing with painter's tape.

Bruce, I assume, by the time you read this, you will have read the tutorial I wrote that Mike linked above on cutting puzzles and realized that you wouldn't have the problem you're having if you didn't use a pattern. You really don't need a pattern for a jigsaw puzzle. To me, it's a superstition that all puzzle pieces have to be the same size. Why? Make them different sizes and use the color lines within the picture as your guide for the edges of pieces. Give it a try...and let us know your progress and questions. Above all, have phun......Carter |

I agree with Carter. I don't use any pattern, it is too restrictive and you tend to worry too much about staying on a line. I have cut puzzels out on a grid, but it was not to a pattern, it was just by feel and I cut each piece about the same size. If I want to cut some figurals into the puzzle, I will just glue the figurals on with a little spray adhesive so I can follow the outline for them. Just let your imagination go and have fun by cutting the pieces any shape you like.

G'day Bruce, A method that I use, if I want a puzzle divided into pieces roughly the same size is a chalk line. Just mark out the board on the edges and flick the chalk line to join the dots

Thanks all for the replys. I think I'll just toss the patterns and do it free handed. John that's neat . I've never heard of doing it that way before. Thanks all....make dust
