This isnt fretwork, or intarsia, maybe somewhere between the two. I made a pen, with the scroll saw. no lathe. I drew a rough design up some months ago and it is posted on here somewhere. I had a few free hours before Christmas so this is what I did. It is a present for a dear friend at work. The woods are fiddleback maple for the feather and rosewood for the spine. The slot in the middle takes a standard ball point stickpen refill. On the underside, I didn't photograph it, is a shaft of mahogany. I may have to put a small ring of brass wire around the tip. I didn't leave enough material for the glue to hold

Hey Carl, All I can say is WOW, I'll bet you will get Bill Young thinking on this one. I consider him the pen MASTER, but this is something totally different, you did an awesome job. Merry Christmas, oops99

Very fine work. Even if you add the wire, it will still look great. The only problem I saw is one you probably noticed, and I am continually frustrated by, which is that the ripples in fiddleback wood run counter to the grain. I still have not come up with a satisfactory solution, so let me know if you find one. I do like the pen, or should I say, quill. Tor

I know what you mean about the ripples and the grain. I haven't used fiddleback much before. It is fun to finish, once you sand the Dickens out of it.

Well now that is really something Carl. A pen made on a scroll saw. Who would have ever thought it would be possible. Just goes to show where there's a will there's a way. Merryy Christmas to all. W.Y. |
