Hi All, I would like to know what blades are best to use for what types of wood. Which blades do YOU recommened for fret in 1/8 and 1/4", which for 3/4" pine, or 3/4" harder woods like walnut or oak. I have seen guides for different sizes, but I would like to know your personal preferences. I am going to order a gross from Mike's, and I want to get the ones that will best suit my needs, I haved used No.3 and No.5 blades for most of the stuff I do, but as I said, I want to know what you like. When I look at the order form, there are 7 different sizes in the Scoll Reverse, alone. Thanks, oops99

Most of my work lately has been 1/4" Oak and Walnut. Mike called me last night and I ordered some FD-PSR No 2/0 and FD-SR No 1. I also use No 3 Bob

Recently I have been cutting 1/4 inch BB with a number 3. I have a lot of tight turns else I would use my favorite size number 5.

Ok now I am going to be in troubale again, buttttt. when I use mikes blades. I use a # 3 for 1/4 inch ply. and titen the blade down tite. if stack cutting, a # 3 or # 5 is good. but I mostly cut one layer at a time, for I dont sell. so I only cut what i like for myself. except, Xmas orniments. sooooo I use olsen blades. a # 2 or a # 0.2. for singale cutting on 1/4 or 1/8 plywood. a revers, so not to chip up the underneath. a skip tooth is slower. and fine for fine fret work. if your new. you wont to go slower. as I have gotton better, I use the milled tooth. thats alot sharper, and faster cutting. but love them. Blades come in all sizes. and teeth per inch. the more teeth, is slower. and don't carry out the sawdust as fast. and the less teeth per inch. carry out more sawdust. the smaller sizes. are easyer to turn corners, and are a bit slower. and the larger the blades are. the harder they are to turn. for the debth of the blades. you just have to experiment. and come to your own likes, also. the kind of saw your useing. hope this helps . your friend Evie

Go to Rick's site: www.scrollsaws.com, scroll down on the left side and check out his blade info. Personally, I use #2R Olsens from 1/4" to 1/2" and #5R for 1/2" to 1". both are skip tooth. If I want real fine lines I'll use a #2/0 R. There is no set gospel as far as what's right or wrong,it's all in what the user is comfortable with.

I use a #3 for most 1/8 and 1/4 woods, although I'll go to a #5 if the 1/4 is a harder wood. For 3/4, I'd probably start with a #7 and go up from there as needed, unless I know the wood is a soft one, in which case I'd start with a #5. The short answer is use the smallest blade that gives you a straight up-and-down cut and you can control. |

oops99. With a statement like this Quote:
But has been been noted, some prefer FD, some prefer Olson, and myself and many others prefer Pegas . I use them exclusively because I have found the Pegas blades to be the very best for my purposes for all types of scrolling in any thickness in any kind of wood. . I think ordering a gross first off from any supplier of any make is a mistake unless you have tried all the others first . A dozen of so of any number or style will soon let you know which size and brand are going to be the ones you will say with. Instead of certain makes for different types of scrolling and another make for another type , I have found that Pegas is the only brand I need to cover all types of scrolling. W.Y. | |

for thin wood and tight turns, get yourself some FD-TC #1 .On thicker wood up to 3/4, get some FD-TC #5 . Dale

As A Beginner Scroller Of 6 Months, I Followed Some Advice From Mikes And Used #3 And 5 Reverse Tooth Blades. I Would Like To Know Where I Can Purchase The Pegas Blades As It Sounds Like They May Be A Good All Around Blade.

WildScroller. If you would like to PM me on site here or email me at valleyview@wynndel.ca I would be glad to answer your question. I do not sell blades myself and do not have any commercial sites but have had extensive experience with the various brands so I can give you adress's to some blade sellers. W.Y.
