I am interested in carving golf balls. I know you take off 1/2 of the skin but I need help after that. I saw a face of a hobo, one of the items I liked. Is there some directions available or a book. I need step by step instructions. Thanks......

Ron, In Issue 27 (Summer 2004) of Wood Carving Illustrated, Nathan Stump walks you step-by-step through carving a duckling in a golf ball. It's no hobo, but that way you can learn the techniques... Just go to www.woodcarvingillustrated.com and you can order the backissues. Bob Duncan Editor Wood Carving Illustrated

What kind of paint works best on a golf ball center? I usually use oil piants thinned to get a washed look on wood, but I'm not sure if oil paints will work on rubber? Any tips? Thanks- Barry |

I DO LIGHTHOUSES IN THE BALLS. PAINT THEM MULTI-OLORED WITH ACRALICS AND SEAL WITH KRAYLON 303, SAND THE BOTTOM FLAT TO KEEP EM FROM ROLLING. I USE TITELIST XL'S, THEY HAVE A GREY CENTER. GOOD LUCK |

Thanks- I thought acrylics would be my best choice, but wanted to ask the experts! I used a Titlelist (sp?) ball too - the gray center should be easy to finish into a neat Santa face ornament. It was quick & fun - rubber is more forgiving than wood. Hopefully my golfer friend will enjoy it! Thanks again- Barry |
