Carving Show

Just got back from a Carving Show in Ft Collins Colo, very good show, this was also the first year that across the hall,they had a woodworkers show......got confused, some of the woodwork those guys (and gals) did was more in the line of art work that wood work...beautiful....we didn't do bad either, won several ribbons! Saw a really neat little tool box for your carving tools that you can take to a class or traveling...have to build one of those....carving shows are great, they are fun, and you can learn all kinds of things....looking forward to the next one!

Interesting, A Mr Chips on the Just woodworking board was at the Ft Collins woodcarving /woodworking show. 8)

LIke I replied there, I go to 2 wood carving shows a year and spending to much is usually the case there also. Tsula Ok, and Topeka,Ks.

Hi Sliver...I've been thinking of making a travel type tool box as well. Did the one at the show have a series of holes drilled to hold individual tools or drawers with dividers? I'm wondering which would be the most convenient. Could you give us a rough idea of the dimensions? Any help would be appreciated.
By the way... congratulations on the ribbons.

Ok lets see..it was 6' wide and 12' long, the bottom was a box with a clip on each side for the top to clamp on, bottom was maybe 4' deep, the total height I would guess at about 10-12' the top section had holes all the way around the perimeter and they used the covers from syringes and drilled holes in the bottom to correspond to the tool stored in that particular hole. In the center of the top was a 1x4 vertical with a cut out for a hand hold...Hope I am not divulging any secrets here, I understand another carver made it for the carver that had this one...and the original was larger, about 6x18 inches...I think for my use I will add a third section, a box top of about 2 inches high with a routed slot to slip down over the hand hold. I hope this is written so you can understand it, could draw you a picture in 2 minutes in person, but trying to describe is something else! :

Thx for the reply Sliver. I had no problem picking up the concept from your description. I guess tool boxes like this are mainly an individual thing, but it helps when designing your own to see what others are using. My main reason for building a new box is to carry some of my carving tools when we go camping. At present I use a store bought plastic tool box and it just don't cut it. Thx again...

there's a few pics in my PT album for traveling tools. these are just 'proto types' (that I've had and used for a few years now). I always throw something togeather to see if I like it with plans on making them REAL NICE if I do haha. :P

Anyhow these ones show great promise for me.

Hi Dave...Thx. for sharing your designs. Your travel boxes look like they make for easy access and safe storage. Great idea to be able to stack one on top of the other. I have a lazy susan type rack that I use on my work bench at home but it's not suitable for transporting tools. That's a neat portable vise you came up with as well...

Dave - Sure beats the tackle box that I use. Guess I'll have to get with the program and update. As for the 'proto-type' like we used to say about our hot rods way back when 'If it runs, it's done.'
