carving time

i was wondering how much time everyone spends on their carving. i usually spend about 10 to 15 hours per week at carving reading and finishing my projects.

I try to carve a little every day it doesnt always happen that way. I would say I spend about 25 hours a week carving except if I have commissions and then it could be 40 to 50 hours a week. That's not to mention the time I spend on this message board and reading my carving books and of course sharpening and honing. Now tbat sping has finally arrived it will be less because of all that yard work. Oh well If I ever get where I can make some serious money at this I will hire someone to do my yard.

Hmmm, I hadn't thought about how much time I spend a week....I just think about all the more time I 'can' spend at it, which isn't enough by a long shot. I guess I probably spend about fifteen hours a week carving. I sure look forward to the day when it's my 'full time job', I've never done anything I love so much and makes me so happy! Callynne

I wish I have more carving time as well. I spend an average of 10 hrs a week. On weekends I can spend 16 hours straight carving, painting, etc. But them there are times I do not carve for weeks. Spring and Fall are my favorite more productive carving season. I usually leave a lot of the painting for the cold winter. I am not allowed to carve inside the house. :'(.

im not allowed to carve in the house either....its starting to get too hot to carve in the garage, so i guess i will take a siesta for the summer.

I carve at night one or two hours, four or five days at week, and the weekend I carve at time of my Siesta (my the neighbors hate me >)

It's allready May, and it is getting too hot to carve in the garage, I also am not allowed to carve in the house( wife won't allow it) But how about in the pool??, perfect I have a floating chair, chips float right?? I'll catch the chips in the skimmer and toss them when I'm finished.

I think that's a great idea, Steve :-) I use a spare bedroom in my home as a 'workshop', so I can carve in an air-conditioned/heated comfort - whatever the weather. Carving Santas HAS become my full-time job - I spend somewhere between 10 and 12 hours a day carving and painting, usually. Some days a little less, if I need a break or something...but SOMEthing gets carved or painted every day.

90% of the time, I'm happy to work this much at it - I love what I do and feel fortunate that enough folks out there take an interest in my work. 10% of the time, I'm pissed off that everyone keeps bugging me for more (those are my ungrateful brat days) :

I understand what most of you go through when spring arrives. I have my workshop in the basement and at times feel very guilty about not spending more time outside when the weather is so beautiful. Last weekend, I took over a small portion of my backyard patio to carve out my latest project. ( a squirrel feeder ). I was able to spend some quality time with my wife and help my guilty conscience at the same time. If I had a pool I would take Steve's advice and go that route but for now the patio will work.
