Default Daily post for Thurs, Feb 12th ...

Thought I'd try this, I know there are lots of carvers lurking out there. Was hoping some of you would post here and let us know what you are up to today.
I'm finishing up an Ark set...just about done with 'Mrs Noah' and then back to painting everything. Have a basecoat on everything but this last piece, so I'm getting closer to having this FINISHED! I only have about 5 sets of animals, but can worry about adding more later on, kind of anxious to move on to something else.
O.k...what are ya'll working on today?

I working on a scene with a hunter in overalls and his dog. The hunter is calling for the dog which is directly behind him. The man is to be holding a shotgun. I haven't decided on a base, but I am thinking of putting a stump beside the hunter with a couple of decoys on it.

Would like to get it finished this weekend so I can have it ready for the showcase in Charlotte (NC) next weekend.

I need to finish 3 other carvings that are ready to either paint or put on bases: a minature cowboy ready to draw his guns, a minature of a boy and his dog, and a small clown holding an umbrella.

Thanks for your response! Your carvings sound really great. Do you work from blanks or rough-outs? ...following a pattern on these or your own design?
Did you carve the shotgun in one piece or two pieces to get it to fit in the hand?
Nothing like a carving show to motivate us to finish a project (or two or three ),

Hi, I'm carving the sword 'Sting' in Black walnut from the Lord of the Rings. I did a Viking sword awhile back and it turned out pretty good. So I'm going to try this new one. We'll see how it turns out? Later Gergie,

I'm going to be working on a Wood Duck decoy today. And finishing up
a Carolina Wren. The wren is going to be mounted on a pine branch
that I made from brass rod covered with epoxy. The needles are fine
copper wire.

Well still too much snow to get out to do my tree sculpures but I am carving in the basement and have done about 25 bark carvings and three fair size woodspirits in the last week so I am getting ahead in stock again. I was just given a piece of wild plum by a friend of mine so I think a woodspirit in wild plum will be my next carving. Yes that Santa is still sitting there I guess I should get brave and tackle that thing soon.

Thanks toycarver...

For the first scene - this particular carving is a combination of my design and a rough out. *The dog is 'mine' as he is circling around the man in front. *I could not find a pattern like this so I drew it out and cut it from a blank. *It is very similar to a Tom Wolfe dog however. *The hunter is modified from a Phil Bishop rough out. *His was originally a cowboy (if I remember correctly) and I cut down the body and changed the head quite a bit. *Especially the hat. *The shotgun will actually be one piece as his hand will not be fully around the gun. *It will lay across the palm of his right hand which is upturned. *

All the other smaller carvings are my designs.

Sounds like by the time you are finished you pretty much have an original design. I think the finished project is a little more special when it's your own design.
uh, also I'm..'toycarver' ...not toymaker almost the same thing though

I guess this daily thread kind of works, but it would be nice if we could reply directly to a specific persons post, as it is now, it looks like any response goes to the bottom of list of responses.

Very sorry toycarver.......I corrected.

I recently finished a carving titled 'master toymaker' and I guess that over took me mentally.

I occasionaly take a rough out and change it significantly. This saves a little time and still leaves alot of room for creative carving.

This is a great thread idea. Thanks again. I wished I carved enough to have something to add each day. I'll try to help you keep it going as best as I can.
