Thank you all for looking and the compliments. I have to give credit where credit is due. The friend who gave me the Birch also gave me the idea of cutting them this way. He came to one of my shows a couple of years ago with some of the birch already ripped and sliced and asked me to cut an ornament while he waited. I sketched a Christmas tree on a piece, drilled an entry hole with the Dremel and cut it out while he waited. It was an instant hit, people watching wanted them right then. Also must give credit to another pattern maker, Bradford Needham, he made the pattern on the ornament second from the left on the bottom (it is a derivative of his original pattern). It can be found in the Holiday 2006 issue #25 of SSW&C, page30. As per SteveK's request here is another picture with a quarter in it to reference the sizes. The two on the left I just made today. The bottom left one is made with the "waste" from the slice out of the limb. I don't think I'll cut any more like that. It is hard to control, as the limb being round it is difficult to keep the piece flat on the saw table. Last edited by Plaquerd; 08-18-2012 at 05:09 PM. |

Very nice Dave. Those look like very intricate cuts and so perfect. What size blade do you use?

Dotty Thanks for the compliments, but believe me they aren't perfect. Flying Dutchman PS 2/0 33 TPI, at about 3/4 speed on a Dewalt 788. |
