My wife teaches at at Catholic School. She teaches third grade which is the year they make their First Communion. She asked me to make this cross for each of her students as a gift. My brother also bought one for a friend of his whose son was making his first communion. Pattern is by Sue Mey. I got it from The Wooden Teddybear. The cross is oak vaneer plywood and the backer is stained luan. It's cheap and looks good with a stain on it. Thanks for looking.

Wow - a beautiful gift - how many did you do? - I'm trying to imagine the time commitment to do one of these for a whole class .... Jay |

Luckily her class is pretty small. Six kids this year. I cut them in stacks of five so I should have had a start on next year. Unfortunately, out of the ten I cut, two were trashed when I hit a gap in the plywood and the letters broke off very easily. One had to be scrapped because some of the veneer came off when I peeled the pattern back. I must have just gotten a bad board. I usually don't have gap and veneer problems with my plywood. So started with ten, ended with seven, and sold one. That leaves the six she needs. I guess someone was looking out for me after all.

Looks really great, Keith! Lately, I have been using Oak plywood instead of Baltic Birch. Looks much better, in my opinion. Paul

That's a nice project and it is going to be a nice memento in the child's spiritual life. Isn't it funny how things work out when 'someone is looking out for you' ~ you don't always get what you want but you do get what you need. John
