Default recently finished oil lantern

This one took entirely too long to do, as it was strictly done in my spare time. But finally I finished this little lantern project and thought I'd show it here.

It stands 14.5" at the highest points and is 7" along each side. The entire thing was cut from pine and birch using a scroll saw and several different blades. When it was all cut out, it was painted with two coats of milk paint and lacquered with three coats of Krylon satin finish acrylic.

The light source inside is an oil lamp made from an old incandescent light bulb and a fiberglass wick I bought at the hardware store. The caddy that holds the lamp (not pictured) was also cut with the scroll saw.

This is my first ever attempt at building something like this, and the errors in my design are very obvious to me now. The final fit was way too tight, and I should have made the crown taller, as it gets a bit hot when the flame is lit. To counter this, I'll probably buy some brass plate and make a shield to go under the crown.

But despite its flaws, I'm proud of it, and I really like the soft yellow light it puts out. The glass panels there are white opalescent, bought at Hobby Lobby and cut with a regular old manual glass cutter.

The picture on the far left is closest to the real color. I don't know why that second one looks duller.

G'day R.J.
A very nice project. A lot of work by the looks, but well worth it.

Thanks guys. I know it's just a lantern, but it's one of those things I had in my head for awhile and finally got to make a reality. It will probably never leave my house, but you know how it is when you imagine something, then finally bring it to fruition. It's a good feeling. Thanks for indulging me in this bragging section here.
