Hello everyone, I feel like I'm hogging this forum so please tell me to stop, if I am. I've had several requests for information on how to carve eggs and I would just like to comment briefly on that. Then I want to show you another egg that I believe you all could learn how to do. First off, I've been doing this for over 25 years now and have dedicated my life to it for over 20 years. After all that time, I will be the first to tell you I'm still learning and hope the learning never stops. I've done Fine Art and Craft shows all over the country but finally realized I took an early retirement back in 95. Now I just carve away and try new things. I use an NSK Dental Lab hand piece and Dental burs for my carving but there are still other items needed. All in all, a new carver would spend around $1000.00 to get started. That would be the hand piece, air compressor, dental burs and dust collector - not to mention eggs, egg marker, and a few other incidentals. You can use a Dremel and Dental burs for some carving but the vibration from the Dremel makes carving delicate work extremely challenging. It is a starting point though. Now the good news. I've been working on a carving technique for doing spiral designs in larger eggs ( rhea, emu and ostrich ) and I believe I've come up with something, something that most folks should be able to do. It's done using a Dremel and the designs done with it are mind boggling. I dare say anyone seeing them will be in awe. One thing I do want to say is that I never do anything to harden or strenghten my shells - before or after I cut. Anyway, here's a couple of eggs done with a Dremel and I would be willing to do a turtorial on this technique as soon as I finish working on it. That should be shortly. Hey there Ron, what a delightful tutorial. I also think your eggs look terrific. Now much does the dental tool go for? I got most of the other stuff except eggs. I wish I would have known you about 13 years ago when I made my meager attempts. I used a dremel tool and while it did the job it was less than acceptable. Thanks for sharing.

Ron, I for one can not wait for you to put together a turtorial on egg shell scrolling or carving. That is such lovely work and you should be very proud of the work you do on them. Thanks for sharing them with us and Thank you in advance for teaching us how to do them.

Aloha Ron, Awesome Ron! Having spent 30 years perfecting my art form, I can truly appreciate your work, and having been a boat carpenter, I can understand the pattern work, it's your execution that blows me away! I'm goint to assume that with your 25 years, your carving technique is hand / eye, AWESOME WORK, amazingly clean, I am very impressed! When I add to that how fragile the shells are.... wow! I look forward to your tutorial with great interest! :-) Ray |
