Hello the fellow scrollers , I have two questions that I need your feed back on . Here we go , I'm going to give two Portriats away to smokers . Would it be or not a good idea when I frame these to leave the glass over the portriat for the protection against that Nicotine and smoke . Question two , should I not glue the backer board to the portrait in case later it needs to be re-poly-ed , now this one is just food for thought. I've been thinking about these two questions and just thought that my scrollsaw friends could address this problem and help me on this . I Thank you so much for your thoughts on this matter !!!!! Marshall

Marshall, You can try, I have done several that way also I have used an oak board and routed the edges the used small gold nails its a nice look on one I sued an ebony stain on the oak instead of a felt back or black backer board. The problem i had with all of this is that every one I have glued to the backer board or nailed to the oak has warped. I'm still new at this so I'm suer its something I did worng. kerry |

Marshall. I think it is a good idea to have a glass on the portraits. but not for only smokers, There is lots of slime things in a home, say just cooking. grease gets every where. also if someone likes to use wood for heat. the smut from that gets every where. I am not sure on the backer board. I would think it would help it from warping. but thats just me. Ps. making the gift is the thing you are doing, taking care of it, is theirs. when I give a gift, I don't worry about how they live. only that I made their life worth living, its a one time thing. the gift is in the giving, not how they live their lives, and appreciate what you give. sorry thats my 2 cts worth. your friend Evie

Id say yes, put glass over it to help keep it nice a little longer. And it makes dusting it much easier too. As for the backer, I wouldnt think you need to worry about having to remove it to refinish it again someday (biting my tongue on a smart a$$ed comment in my mind right now).My thinking is that if it needs to be refinished later on, it would be more work to get the tar buildup and old finish off prior to refinishing that it would be easier to just recut it.

I do quite a few portrait cuts and all of them go in frames behind glass. Not only does that protect from airborne "debris" but it lessens the chance of delicate cuts tearing out later. Also, I use felt or cloth backing almost all the time although I have used foil wrapping paper on some dragons. The customers and I both prefer the texture the felt gives the background.
