Default New job I'm honored to do.

Grandma's 87th is coming up and I was asked to do a portrait of my great-grandparents for her. Didn't think twice. Here's the original and the pattern.

Awesome pattern, I want to see the finished portrait. I know it is going to be sweet.

Kevin,

Great work, Wish I could do that. What do you use to make the patterns? Whatever it is, I want to get it. I just hope you don't do it freehand, if you do, I'm screwed....

Thanks David, I have Corel Draw3, but don't know how to do vector graphics with it. I guess I'll have to learn

Hi Mike,
The program I use for making my patterns is called Gimp. Its a free download (my favorite $) used for photo editing.

Unfortunately there isn't a "Make Scroll Saw Pattern" button. In the simplest description, what I do is change the picture to gray scale, lighten the areas that I don't want, and darken the areas that I want to keep. After doing that I adjust the contrast of the picture to it's maximum. (Sounds simple, but it involves a lot of highlighting, erasing, and contrast adjustment, undo contrast, lighten, darken and on and on). Once I've got the picture where I want it, I start painting or erasing to ensure that picture looks right and I don't end up with any drop outs.

I'm still new at this, and there are probably guys out there who are more experienced than me who are saying "He's doing it WAY wrong. All he has to do is...."
