Default Continuing Steviegwood's "What is the ultimate fretwork pattern?" thread

Several months ago, Steve started a thread with:

I am interested in what you all come up with for ideas. Steve
Today, at Scrollabration PA, I saw this piece and couldn't help but to take a picture of it and continue Steve's thread. I have no idea who worked this piece but it grabbed my attention since it seemed to answer Steve's original question to a certain degree. However, it kinda also may apply to Jeff's quest to incorporate carving into his work. I couldn't touch it but it made me feel like I wanted to since it was like a 3D fretwork piece. I have no idea how they did it, but thought I would share it with you. If this belongs to anyone here, please come forward and shrare your progress story with us. I just love it!

That piece is definitely a work of art, as Carl just said. I love the way it's presented and framed.

Thanks for posting, Mia.

Great piece of work. My first thought is that they cut the outer perimeter on an angle to raise it and the contoured it, but I dont see any seam at all.
Thanks for the picture .
How was the turnout and show?

That piece looks amazingly like the adds for the Craftsman Compucarver. I'd love to know how it was done.

Thumbs up

That was my first impression too Kevin. It appears that the fretwork images and the wood they were cut from are one integral piece. Even if that's the case and the images were "milled" into the board, it still opens up some interesting options for contouring fretwork. Why didn't I think of that??? But then........I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!!!! LOL!!! I took another look at the photos and it does look as if the image may have been cut from the top board and then elevated. Then the whole thing was glued to another board to conceal the cavity in back????

I received an email from Dick Miraglia and then realized that it was the same piece that Mia showed in this thread: "Hello Sue:Yesterday, at the Scrollsaw Association Contest at the Pa Scrollabration 2007, my Wildcats of the World project received a First Place, Best of Class, and Best of Show Awards. I selected your Puma and Leopard patterns to include in my work because you have the ability to capture the spirit of the animal in your patterns. Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your contribution to my success at this show. Keep on doing these great patterns and happy scrolling. Sincerely, Dick Miraglia, Pocono Lake, Pa. Attached is a picture of my project."

I have asked Dick to elaborate on the technique and will pass on the info with his consent
