The first thing you need to do is make sure you obtain the correct program if you dont already have it. There are a number of programs out there. I use photoshop and some times GIMP. If you dont have the correct programming you can download GIMP for free. I do not have the web site, sorry. Hopefully someone will chime in on where you can get it. There are some good how too's out there.

So the first question for you is; What kind of graphics programing do you have? If we know that we will be better able to help you.

Ok, I would suggest that you find and down load the Gimp program for free. Again I do not have the web site address. If someone does not help you out with that it should be fairly easy to search for and find. If you have issues finding it drop me an e-mail @ Messmanswoodworking@cox.net and I will do what I can for you.

There are several tutorials for creating portrait patterns from photos here:
Scroll Saw Design Tutorials - Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Message Board

There are probably more recommendations for programs to use than there are designers, but you can use just about anything. Amazingly, some people actually use paper and pencil

Cleaning up a pattern is getting rid of the "floaters" (the white pieces that need to be part of the pattern but are surrounded by the black areas that will be removed as waste). If the floaters aren't cleaned up/fixed when you cut the black pieces that shouldn't be removed will fall out.
Things like the irises of the eyes or teeth often become problem areas... hair or checked shirts. I have a little tutorial here that tries to explain it a bit. Good luck.
