thnx everyone, so far all the help has been great. i've gotten the gimp program, followed the tutorials & now have what i think might be an ok first attempt. i do however have a few more questions. the tutorial says after saving the file open inkscape... what is that & where can i find it, or can i use something else ? & # 2 question is now that i've done all this it seems as though i can no longer open any of my pics the way they used to does that make sense or has anyone else had this problem ??

Sorry I don't look at this part of the forum that often. Inkscape can be found at: Inkscape.org I downloaded and tried it out on a quick and dirty pattern I submitted for a request yesterday and it seemed to clean up the picture a bit. I'll definitely play around with it some more.

DPK, I use a pencil & paper. Haven't gotten into the photo shop software yet. Will try it soon & see if it is more time consuming or not. I just trace the outline, fill in the inner most important parts, like, eyes, nose, etc. I have even done my grandson's that way. Works for me, BUT, I have an artistic talent that helps. Hope you can work something out & you will really enjoy doing the portraits, no matter how you do it. Good Luck PERK
