Good Day Folks!

Name here is Steven. I am new to the hobby of scroll sawing, I was browsing around you-tube for model railroad stuff, and stumbled upon a video "introduction to scroll sawing" by Steve Good, and it peeked my interest. My brother back home in Wisconsin, has a really nice woodworking shop, however, while I was living there, I was not that interested. I just purchased a scroll saw, but have not received it yet. Until than, I will be learning has much has I can, by reading the various forums, watching videos, and reading books. I would like to saw thanks in advance, to all the folks that take time to post, and answer our "newbie" questions. In return, has I learn this hobby, I will do the same.

My other hobbies include, model railroading (currently just building rail themed dioramas), building other model kits, and going trackside to watch and take pictures of real trains, I have a General Class Amateur Radio License. I also spend a fair amount of time on my Shortwave Radio, searching out the distant signals, including WX fax, number stations, clandestine stations and decoding assorted digital signals. I also have several scanners, which I use to monitor local law, fire, and other assorted signals including rail, air, and businesses.

Hello all I'm almost older than dirt, doing lots of scrolling until supporting a family put it on hold. My Dad bought my first 4" scroll saw vibrating linear motor from Sears & Sawbucks in the early 1950's, of course blades aren't available now. I still have it sitting on a shelve in my 2400 sq. ft. barn/workshop complete with full bath [shower]. Two of my most useful tools are a double utility sink and 80 gallon 5 HP 2 stage compressor, which get used every time I'm out it barn. Over the 40 working years I have accumulated a lot of "I might need that someday" stuff to the point my CFO aka wife said "you clean up that barn or I will". All I could imagine was her driving in barn on our tractor using the front end loader scooping up my "stuff" and taking it to the dump.

Of course she was right on, 6 pick-ups later l saw more concrete than ever before. My son still needs to move some of his "stuff' out of Dad's free Public Storage too. He's said he'd get right on it several times now. Lucky the clean-up was complete before the Texas summer arrived making work miserable.

Now that the temperatures have dropped below 100 degrees, almost fall in Texas, I'm ready to get out and cut some sick/dead trees out of our 30 acres of woods, which occupies half of our land. A neighbor has a horizontal band saw mill to rough cut my timber. I have what's needed to bring it down to finished stock of any thickness. A local cabinet shop has offered to sell me plywood and other woods at his cost to keep his discount low during these economic times.

My hobby is 16-18th century static model ships i.e. US Constitution & HMS Victory. Having assembled many as a kid and young adult, this time I wanted more of a challenge to build in wood. A web search revealed several e-tailers offering wood kits. Wow, $1200+ for a "kit" took my breath away. Those model builders in Europe must be on a different pay scale than I was. Of course what I remembered was the 50-60s prices. Gee, if I could get drawings I can scratch build and get some tools to boot for those kit prices [a TAD symptom]. Now there is free software to scan it drawings or files directly and scale them as needed then print them out. No more drafting machines, triangles, scale rulers, and India ink on velum.

To this old timer who recalls many a trek to the local library to search for model boat plans in 629.nn section of books, to me the web is like striking gold at home. Now I have enough plans to outlast my remaining lifetime guarantee. If I'm considering a tool purchase or need technical information it's just a keyboard away.

While searching for tools I stumbled on Craigslist another goldmine this time for tools. I order most of what I need though the web since we are 55 miles west of Fort Worth the nearest town is 5 miles away and 3 blocks long pop. 440. Both FedEx & UPS know exactly where we are.

While in the USAF doing my 4 year hitch I often visited the base hobby shop, falling in love with their Delta 24" spring return cast iron beauty of a scroll saw. It made my little 4" Sears vibrator saw look like a toy. Oh what joy, a scroll saw that cut wood like mowing grass. Since the hobby shop's was bolted down I made up my mind to get one of my own.

As the year passed by I moved from radar to computers in the mid 60's. Big mainframes from Burroughs then IBM my scroll saw skills really helped repairing small assembles. So my job went from Repairman >Electronics Technician>Systems Engineer>Operations Manager.

I confess the prices of Craigslist gave me a case of TAD [tool acquisition disorder]. Buying almost new Delta 40-460 for $200 from a local school district who closed down their H.S. workshop [lawsuits I was told]. Too bad I didn't bring an 800 lb gorilla to pick it up! Adding to my collection a Hegner Polymax 3 $50, Delta 40-540 $25, new Delta ShopMaster $50, and Grizzly G0537 C-arm $15. It's distresses me to see folks part with tools at these prices, yet I offer more than pawn shops ever would. Still I feel like one of our buzzards soaring above looking for a meal.

My TAD continued with Ridgid 14", Sears 12" band saws, Performax 16-32 drum sander, Ryobi 12" bench drill press, 2 HP dust collector, and 20" woodtek planer. I not mentioning the numerous other collected during my 40 years. My grown son said "Dad, if you ever move I bring 3 overseas containers you fill-em I'll move-em".

During all these years by watching and asking, I have learned to weld metal & plastic, HVAC certified, doing all types of mechanic work, electrical, pneu-dralics, and certified micro circuit repair. I earn recognition as Handy-Dan from my co-workers. Attended enough equipment schools, college, and earned certifications to be called over educated. So that ought to bring up to speed on me.

To sum it up my life has been what we students in USAF Radar Repairman called Aircraft Control & Warning [All Confusion & Wonderment]. Now life is all Saturdays and Sunday and time to get back to playing and still learning.

Perhaps the membership list could indicate somehow by location -Province and or state and if that individual would be open to a get together with other members. Just a thought for what it's worth. Thanks ,RW

My first patterns were simple pendants made from oak and then sanded to shape. My wife owns a small beading store so the pendants are useful to her.
Anyone else near NE Georgia?
