For the longest time I was a pin blade guy. Pin blades seemed to have it hands down over pinless ones. Since they don't require holders which add oscillating weight and are KISS [keep it simple stupid] to install they would have dominated the scroll saw market. Except for fretwork a niche'. Well the years have shot that assumption down. At least cam-clamps seem to be displacing screw ones.

Has anyone experience clamp wear such where the clamp loses friction by surface wear? Most clamps I've seen, which isn't many, appear to have smooth surfaces like the blades. Is there some scroller's trick to keep blades secure without applying excess clamp force? This question occurred to me while looking a Hegner's clamp tool and their 'tuff screws' implying a lot of force would be applied to clamp the blade.

I was wondering does anyone roughen to blade ends to provide more clamp bite? I would assume new pinless blades have a protective coating like oil. bluing, or thin varnish to keep-off corrosion before use. Would wiping with lacquer thinner be sufficient to remove it or a quick wipe with emery cloth.

Is beeswax still used to extend blade life? Olson sells a lube stick for band saws I have a couple of those. How about Olson's lube on scroll saws?

My first scroll saw still needs some 4" pinned blades, have anyone found them. My web searches haven't had any results.

Thanks

So, I'm experimenting with the #5 FD Polar blades when I hear the familiar blade snap, and feel the sharp pain in the finger. I instantly thought back to another post by StevieGWood where he did basically the same thing. Got a little blood on the floor, but the puncture is pretty minor. Can't tell for sure, but I think it only got me once.

I've been working on the tablesaw and compound sliding miter all weekend, so I feel pretty lucky to have had my little accident on the scroll saw. Little mishaps on the other toys aren't so forgiving.

So, no one beside Stevie and I have ever been stabbed/cut/smashed?

My parents celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary earlier this year so I designed something to commemorate the event. Actually, I wanted to design something appropriate to any romantic occasion; there's no reason why this project wouldn't be well received on say, Valentine's Day.

My parents live in the foothills of the Lincolnshire Wolds, the home of the Poet Laureate, Alfred, Lord Tennyson who wrote such works as The Charge of the Light Brigade and Maud . It seemed fitting that the project should encompass the local poet so I chose a quotation from Tennyson's play, Becket.

It's a straight forward relief-cut out of MDF with the letters rounded over and painted in acrylic.

Perhaps people tasked with producing something to mark a forthcoming anniversary or a romantic event might find inspiration in this project. I hope so.

I would appreciate your thoughts on using a 10" band saw with a 1/8" or 3/16" blade for roughing out stock before finish cutting with a scroll saw. I would imagine a band saw would make quick work of preparing plywood keels and bulkhead prior to scroll saw. Cutting blade access slots and generally facilitating a scroll saw work.

These band saws are at the $50 price level used in almost new condition about the price of 5 blades.

I work siting down and want my scroll saws mounted in a work center so a common foot switch will control all saws via power strip. This would allow me to use a common air compressor and dust collector also. More importantly it keep blades, tools, special jigs, all in one place. When ever possible I construct my work benches out of steel tubing with locking casters for mobility. Have any of you built something like this? It would be greatly appreciated if you would email any photos you may have so I don't have to reinvent the wheel or worse miss a great idea. Thanks

I did some scrolling as a kid then while in the USAF but that's long ago so I need to hurry up an catch up.

While visiting the US Hegner website I noticed the 3 blade holders are offered. Given the following what one(s) would you suggest, Are they durable enough to last considering the screw get a workout. Since I have limited experiences, mostly bad, with blade holders how well do they hold-up in infrequent use? How do I prevent the blade from moving off-center as tightening pressure is applied

My application is 16-18th century model ships like USS Constitution and HMS Victory. Here is a list of wood, thicknesses, uses:

5mm, 1/4", 3/8" Baltic birch plywood [keel,bulkheads,deck]
3/32" - 2mm ash,basswood,walnut [hull planking[
<1/2" oak, pecan, elm, mesquite [deck furniture, masts, spars]

My polymax was acquired used and some light surface rust has form on the cast iron table, What's the best way to restore the table finish so it may be waxed.

Has using beeswax on blades gone out of style because something better has come out.

The bellows is missing, I plan on using one of my <1/4 HP diaphragm compressor, which cost 1/2 the replacement bellows price, will this work? I'm wondering about condensation on humid days?

I plan on cannibalizing cheapo LED flashlights, convert to AC power. for tool work-lights. Is there a better option that provide their bright light.

The Hegner arms have lube holes would injecting grease be a better option than oil. I use synthetic lubes except for oiling there I prefer chainsaw oil for it's clingfilm lubrication, rust inhibitors, and heat resistance.

I'm toying with the idea of using auto 12 volt squirrel cage blower as a mini dust collector for scroll saws in lieu of vacuum or dust collector. Since the saw dust is fine it shouldn't damage the cage. Then route discharge into a 5 gallon pail filled with 2" of water like the old Rexair vacuums.

Has anyone developed a way to calibrate blade tension so repeatable settings can be duplicated aka band saw tension gauge?

My saw's paint has some battle scars what common paint matches?

Finally, has anybody used a stroboscope to troubleshoot vibration reduction. I did this quite successfully while working on several printers, compressors, and motors.

Thanks

Do you have some type of formal art instruction/training?

I have some basic drawing skills but would really like to improve my skills. I've thought about going back to school but wasn't sure if it was worth my time or the expense. Not just for pattern making but I was thinking about graphic design also. But then the fact that I'm almost 46 makes me wonder if maybe I just put off going back to school for too long, especially if I'm looking to change careers.

I do have a bunch of downloaded lessons from drawspace that I'm going to start working through. I was just curious how you all got started designing patterns.

Any and all opinions are welcomed.

See, it is a stupid question. I have a co-worker that wants me to make something for her sister's birthday. I think I may need to use a couple of dowels for what she wants. I want to make sure the finish I put on the entire thing ends up matching so I would make the rest of the item out of the same wood.

I just never gave it any thought as to what type of wood they are made out of.
