Now for the meat of the issue - Blade Selection, Blade tension and speed. I'm using a RBI VS22. The Olson chart - to much info for a novice. I want to make Orniments, got 1/4" good plywood. What speed etc do you use? I tried one of the Mach 1 blades - #3 - wow NICE! Thoughts please!

Oily's post on the trivet from the trash inspired this post. We recycle at my house AND I'm a cheapscate on top of that, so everyone who will, share your cheap-o or re-used wood source!

One of MY favorite sources for wood is Goodwill. Ours has a whole isle just for wooden items like shelves and decor and you never know what else. Occasionally I find something that I just want to sand, refinish, and keep (one of my favorites is the wooden anchor shaped wine rack that I paid $2 for the other day). But I can always find several items that have good scrollable sized pieces of various species and thicknesses. Most items only cost a couple bucks too. Lots of times I can find log slices too. May have to scrape a picture or something off of it, but these usually cost around a dollar. Also, if you go on Saturday, everything's half off....so it's really cheap then.

Another possible source if you live in a town where there is roadside pickup, is lots of times I see larger furniture pieces on the side of the road for pickup (tables, bookshelves, ect...) Just for the price of your time in asking first, you can possibly tote off some very nice and would be expensive chunks of wood!

just a few questions

Ah, where do I start? Blades. Is there an easy way to change the blades in a Ryobi? The pinned blades are fairly easy. It's the pinless blades that are giving me fits. I can thread it into the bottom clamp easy enough. But once I think I have it in the top clamp properly, I tighten that clamp, then start to tighten the tension for the blade and the blade simply pops out and I have to start all over again. Plus, I can't seem to thread it without doing a contortionist act to the see the top slot for the pinless blade.

Circles. I've been practicing on some Christmas ornaments I found on Steve Goods website. I'm not having much luck cutting the circle out. Very uneven. I'm hoping that time and practice will improve this. Do I go fast or slow?

Blades. I'm not sure what I all have. Some came with the saw when I bought it. Some I got from my Dad. His blades were the small toothed ones, plus a few all the way round blades (the ones that will cut in any direction).

Can the saws table top be waxed so the wood turns more easily when doing circles or ovals?

The saw is a Ryobi SC-165 VS scroll saw. The table does tilt 45. It also takes the pinned and pinless blades. It probably would not have been my first choice but for $50 and never been used I figured it would be a good starter saw.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you
The noise seems coming from the front off the blade clamp ?
Oiled this also but after machine is used for 15 min or still 'warm' the same thing again.
There is no noise if the scroll station is cold and not used for a long time .

Anyone have the same problem?
Also looking for a replacement DC Motor for this
any idea how much these cost ?
Thank you for any help

Another neat project from Steve Good! Thanks Steve!!!!! Although, mine didn't turn out quite like planned.

I cut it from thicker wood than in his pattern plan and just adjusted my table for the angle. Well, hindsight is 20/20. Shouldn't have done that. It was just a pain in the royal behind. The blade drifted too much and I couldn't get the pieces apart in either direction to sand better. Also, in trying to force them apart in the direction that they SHOULD have came apart, one of the layers busted, so my box is minus one layer of the original pattern.

Also, instead of going with a store bought votive candle, I made this handy little wood tealight candle holder. Just cut a perfect circle on a steep bevel, drill a hole with a forsner or spade bit the diamater and depth of a standard tealight candle, then round over the bottom at the sander. The tealight candles are in a metal holder. So far, there's been no danger of burning the wood. :rolleyes_old:
