golf balls?

As you can see I have been carving some golf ball Caricatures.
I had read the article in Carving magazine issue #5 by Tom Rhodes.
Then a friend asked me to carve him one and gave me some .
I have carved about six now that I have given away.
It takes me about 3 hours to complete one. I have been ask if I would carve some more and what I charge, but I have no Idea what would be a fair price to ask.
I have tried to see what others have been selling them for and have not found a pricing.
Any one know?

I have carved several, altho I have not sold any, from what I have seen most go for $25.00 area.

I carved and sold quite a few about 5 years ago. My charges depended on the mounting. If I just mounted them on a 2x2 or 3x3 piece of finished wood, epoxied on top of a wooden golf tee, I charged about $20. If I got more elaborate with the base, $25. If I just turned the cap (the half of the golfball that I removed) upside Down and ran a screw up into the half that I carved, I sold them for $15. This isn't a good area for getting good prices for anything hand made, but I sold several to golfers or to people who worked for/with golfers. Hope that gives you some ideas.

Is there a special braND OR TYPE of ball that is solid core enough to carve?

weird thing to carve i never would have thought of it,

remembering when i was a kid, once currious bout whats a golf ball made of, soon found out it was rubber bands as the ball flew from my fingers and danced across the floor....

At this point it seems like it’s the newest balls.
If you know a golfer they seem more than happy to give you the golf balls it you will carve one for them. I never know until I cut in to one if it is rubber bands or solid and you get different colors.

all of them now I believe are solid and every brand has been, the difference is color..if you like a particular color, you will have to stay with that brand....as for the rubber bands..haven't seen any of those since the 50's..

Years ago when they still used rubber bands to make golf balls, my younger brother cut the cover off one, then stuck it in a desk drawer in the living room. He had severed enough of the bands that as they weakened and broke they would snap and rattle against some papers in the drawer. My Mom heard it rattling, thought a varmint of some kind was in the house and was about ready to evacuate until she got up enough nerve to peek in the drawer. No one was ever allowed or had nerve enough to cut up another golf ball in the house. LOL

I have had the best luck with Topflite golf balls as far as golfball carving goes.
Usually the high end golf ball are the ones that have rubberbands Titlelist mainly.

My two cents: After you have carved a few dozen golf balls, you will find that you can carve one in less than an hour, painting takes about one half hour and mounting on a golf tee about ten minutes, put the above on a base and you have a $15.00 sellable item.Big Al
