| I just started my first caricature carving Hi Gang,
This evening was our local club meeting. Usually there is a different project each week. Last week I instucted Pumkin carving we had a ball. This week one of our carvers instructed us in carving a caricature, an old salt with sowester and raincoat. I have never carved a caricature in my life although I love the end result of what you guys do. I had a ball I just love doing them although it is something a whole lot different from anything I have done before. It was funny to look around the room although we all had the same pattern there were no two carvings identical. Looks like I might find myself sitting in the work shop on these cold winter nights doing a few of these delightful caricatures. Who knows maybe I will get hooked. Just wanted to share that.

Caricatures are addictive. Enjoy the experience. Your carvings have inspired us all and if you carve caricatures I am sure that we will get inspired by them as well.
I was at a carving class for caricatures and there were 30 of us all carving the same small santa and there were not two alike. This was true even though we all had the same go-by and the same instructor. Truly amazing how the minds eye percieves the caricature in the wood.

Your Wood Spirit carvings have pushed me out to my front yard to study an old Pecan tree to see if I dare give it a try. Well, so far, I haven't dared.
I am enthralled with caricature carving. I feel like there is a double talent involved. The first is actually carving the wood to make it look like you want it to look like. The second is determining what features should be exaggerated in order to produce the most desirable figure. I think that you probably already go through that process when you carve Wood Spirits because you can't call one up on the phone and ask him to come over and model for you or let you take a picture of him.
I look forward to hearing your expereience.

Jerry - Don't be in a big rush to go after that Pecan tree, It's hard as hickory. | |

#9 | | Guest | Re: I just started my first caricature carving The beauty of caricature carving is that it doesn't have to look like anyone ( including animal carvings) ' dressing ' them is the most fun, like suspenders, patches, exposed toes, big ears, big nose, hands, etc. Also if you make a mistake on a hat you can always make him bald, or tilt the hat over one eye ( if you have a problem making them both alike) The rougher my carvings look ( I don't sand) the more people like them.
