Default Something Different

I've started to experiment with edge effects, and got the really dumb idea to try a bowl with 8 points. That meant trying to make 8 freehand shapes look like each other, nice and smooth inside and out, without catching an edge on the sander and flinging the bowl across the room, or sanding through the wood.

I had serious doubts that I could pull it off, but chose a 3/8" ring (wider than I've been using) to give me plenty of wood to work with, and chose sapele because it sands really nicely, like mahogany.

It took a lot more time than I thought, but was less fragile than it looked, and I think it's pretty cool.

Wow, that is some kind of sanding Carole....I don't plan on even trying that one, not even after I get 10 years experience making bowls.
Very nice.

Very nice bowl and very cool effect all the point look really good. What sander/sanders did you use on this one. I think I would like to give a bowl like that one a try. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful!!!

So what did you use to sand with? My immediate thought would be to mark the 8 high points and 8 low points, then grab my power carver and go for it. Next I'd wrap up with finish sanding.

I really appreciate your sharing ideas and projects. Really gets me thinking about design options I would never have thought of.

Lord Bless!

I WAITED patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.
He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,
And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will see and fear
And will trust in the Lord.
