| Black Walnut I've been hearing about this wood for the last couple years and this weekend it finally came through...
one of the guys from our fishing group inherited the wood from his dads clock business, he wasn't quite sure what I wanted some he brought me this for starters...
9 boards of black walnut and 4 boards of Arizona cypress?

| You folks that have hardwood in supplies like that are lucky. The only place I can purchase walnut or any hardwood is at WoodCraft and you know how expensive that is. None of the lumber yards carry hardwood except in plywood. Its a wonder being in Southern Idaho - they don't sell sage brush. |

| I've heard of Black Walnut... between the two lumber yards I use, I actually haven't seen it before...
I finally got to whole story about the wood..
I first heard about it through another guy who was going to get me the wood in trade for a rod rack but he never came through. the guy who actually had the wood joined our fishing group a while back so it didn't cost me anything..
the guys dad wanted to turn his clock hobby into a business. He took on a partner and they bought 2 truck loads of this black walnut. their plan was to sell pre-cut clock kits but after a couple months the partner decided to start his own clock business and left the guy hanging with all this wood..
he ended up dieing before he could use most of it so it sat in the barn for years, a lot of it was burned in the fire place...but the guy did hold on to some of it....
he was telling me that he has a couple pre-cut grandfather clock kits and said that I could have them too...
now I need to figure out what I'm going to do with it...

| It would be easy to figure out what to do; hmm. . . . . I know! Cut it up!!!!!!!!! Of course, figuring out the exact shape of the cutting could present some issues but that will be minor to whole nice feeling of running all that old square through the saw blade! If you could get more I could tell you about some plans for a day bed made of walnut. It sure is a pretty bed!
But, good luck. That's a nice haul and it sounds like you have a good friend when he thinks of you like that!
John

| Nice haul Trout. I have been using walnut for years. A cousin gave me some when I retired and I made a buffet for my dining room. A friend of my son gave him some from a barn attic to make into a display shelf. If I didn't charge him any left overs were for me. 20 bf for free ($7.50 at the lumber yard I use, where it is always available): a nice payout for three hours of work. Another friends brother cut down a tree and I got 10 or 12 logs (all 18" long or so). They are mostly drying after being resawn into pieces. I currently use them to make small toys and standup puzzles for my granddaughter. My wife is after me to make a silverware box for her ( in my spare time). If I knew you were that desparate, I would have sent you some. By the way, the dust is an irritant and a sensitizer so use a mask and collection system.

| Thats a great stash Trout.
We all have great wood to cut in our own areas, and some of the stuff I use to start fires, some people would give thier eye teeth for.
I know it wouldn't be practical to exchange woods across the border but I bet people state side could set up a wood exchange.

| Good Idea Carl. I have quit a bit of red cedar. I love to work with it (smells great). But it's a little to brittle for fretwork. I have made several clocks from it. Only problem shipping has gotten so high. I pay more for that than the wood.

| May I suggest Intarsia. Bald Eages wings it is beautiful and you use most of the wood if laied out carefully. That way you dont lose it in drop... The Rose box in the last issue of Scroll Saw would look awesoome... with that grain ....
I have to go get the drool off of my key board now...
Congradulations....on a great find.... |
