Default woodspirit

I found a new friend in town that does some carving. We got together today and carved out a couple woodspirits. This is my first one. It's 3" by 13", carved from a piece of cottonwood bark from a tree in my yard. I'm quite happy with it for being my first one. He certainly makes me laugh, he looks like he's oooohing and aaaaawing about something. Still needs a tiny bit of sanding and a coat of finish, but basically, this is it.

Jeff,
Nice. I have been carving for a few years on and off. Mostly in relief. That is very good for a first attempt.

Nice work Jeff. I often have trouble mustering the patience for solid wood work.

This is carved with a knife and 2 chisels. A rounded gouge like one, and a v groove. That's all it is, and the bark came right out of my yard, didn't cost me a penny. It's all just for experiment and practice. his face is too long and his nose too flat, but It doesn't matter for a woodspirit. I made a much better one this morning with my foredom carver. First one for the fun and general idea of the principals involved. Second one and ones after are to practice control of the machine and making proper noses, as well as better facial proportions. There is no pattern, it's just whatever you see in the wood, and whatever ends up in the end. My second one does have a tighter face and an almost perfect nose. I just care about noses and proportions mostly right now, then I'll focus on eyes in the future. Just baby steps. Thanx everyone for looking. I'm not stopping my scrolling by any means, just trying to learn some new exercises to improve it.
