Default Pop's Herman characters for Ian

Ian... the Herman characters started out as a way to encorporate the lathe and the scrollsaw into one project. Besides, the only thing I knew how to turn on the lathe was custom dowels at first. Seemed like a waste of a tool. I saw some 'nut crackers' once that impressed the devil out of me and thought they would be neat to try. Result... the Hermans. I used the scrollsaw for the detail stuff like the tools, work bench, birdhouses, toys and Model A parts under the workbench of the mechanic. I painted the faces and some of the outfits with acrylic hobby paints. The aprons I made from junk material in my wife's sewing supplies. Herman's body and head were made from discarded 4x4 stock from the local Home Depot that was too twisted or checked to sell. They gave me the bad ones. I have a Herman cobbler on the list for a future project with a leather apron and pieces of shoes on the bench. I guess you can tell I'm never satisfied with normal projects by now. My sister claims Mom dropped me on my head as a baby .. I think it's a curse.

I love those, Pop - they're very nicely done, and the details and accessories are great. I especially like the one with the toy vehicles. They are reminiscent of the German nutcracker figures, but you've certainly taken the idea and run with it.

That drop on the head must have unleashed your creativity ...

Thanks a lot for posting them.

I think they're fabulous. What a wonderful twist on the German Nutcracker theme.

Thanks ever so much, Pop, for such a detailed description of how they're made.

About 15" tall and the base's are 5-1/2 x 8". It's a great place to use those scraps that are too small for a big project yet nice enough to not want to use them to heat the house. They're fun to make... but as usual no market around here for them.
