type of wood used
I have been doing some compound cutting, toothpick holders, mim bird houses. What is the type of wood that works best. I tryed using yellowheart and purpleheart glued together, not a good idea. Out of 6 I got 3 that were just ok.

I use cherry, eastern redwood which is a softer wood, poplar, blue pine, box elder and aromatic cedar. I found that the black walnut sells well as card holders but not birdhouses or angels. Yellow heart and purple heart are just too hard to compound cut with.

Cherry, walnut, poplar work well.

I use poplar, butternut and even white wood (recycled 2 x 4's). My favorite is poplar as it cuts well, seldom burns and stains well.

If using pines or other wood with knots avoid the knots. They often times come apart after cutting and ruin the piece.

Thanks for the help. I found out real fast that oak, purple heart and yellow heart are not the type of wood to use even if they do make a very good looking project.

Add me as a poplar voter. It is easy to cut and even easier to find. Personally, I love the grain contrast in a purely white piece.

I laminated some pine boards together and then cut them to size. When I used clear Watco oil the grain popped and they looked great. I carefully selected boards with straight grain the length of the section of the board and ended up with a beautiful grain the length of the 3D ornaments I was making. (Had to go thru quite a stack of boards at the big box store to find these boards.)

Also, if you want something that is almost white with little grain try basswood. I used turning blanks ordered from Rockler.

I have made a bunch of these compound cuts from Mahogany.

I like using cedar a lot for the birdhouses. I pick mine up at the big box stores...just look by the cedar decking and they have square cedar posts that are just the right size and really reasonable in price

Jim those crosses look great, nice finish. How big are they?
