Default Carole's Bowl Press

In Carole's book, she shows plans for a bowl press. Is there a real need to cut a 10" circle. Wouldn't a 10" square work as well (assuming drilled in the right place) and be easier to store? Then it could store on end.

The advantage of the circle is that you can exert even pressure along the circumference of the rings. The bolts are about the same distance from every point on the rings. If the press is square, the bolts at the corners are further away than the bolts along the sides. Uneven pressure can lead to spaces between the rings. However, a hexagon or octagon would solve that problem.

Check out scrollmania.com, Dave Van Ess' website. Dave is extremely bright and very creative. On the site, in addition to his wonderful PolyDraw program and AngleCalc utility, you'll find a plan for a very versatile bowl press. You may not want to go that elaborate, but you're sure to find some good ideas.

Carole, thanks for quick response. What I was planning, though I will check out Dave's site is to cut a 10" square, then use your pattern for the holes for the bolts. Same pressure pattern, but a square side for storing on end.

Sounds like that should work. Storing the press is a pain, but it's so useful that it is worth the trouble. I use it for laminations and small projects--much easier and more reliable than clamps.

I just explored Dave's website. Got a headache but loved the information.
