Going bowling and a gutterball - Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Message Board

So I finished two more bowls... just red oak... the larger which took an amazing amount of time to sand by hand. (Need to order some additional tools in the sanding dept)

So I decided to use some fancier woods... padouk, walnut and maple for a tri colored bowl... and low and behold the rings were spaced for 3/8th inch wood... and I used 1/2 inch. Gutterball! Of course the rings don't line up. =(

So I am thinking... do I give the bowl to my friend with a lathe and have him work his magic and make it a thinner bowl... or do I just sand her up as it is and go with the Aztec looking shape. Thoughts? (Aztec looking bowl isn't glued or sanding yet)

I have had the same thing happen to me a couple times... I have power sanders so I tried to sand it out and sure enough, there was at least one area I sander right through the side.

I made 1 bowl - by the time I finished sanding it, it was pretty thin. It's made of oak, I don't recall what kind of oil I used to finished it but once it was done it was semitransparent - if it had been bigger it could have passed for a lamp shade!

Go with the Aztec look. If you try to change it you will probably only introduce new problems. It will look good as it is

Keep at it, you are doing good. I'd try the lathe a bit to see how close you can get without making a sieve out of it.

Someone at work saw it and fell in love with it just the way it was. They liked it so much I think I will just sand it up, finish it and give it to them. I like the idea of a bowl like that that is jagged on the outside and smooth on the inside though... just not sure how to do it.
