Simon, what works for me is, SLOW CUTTING, as I'm sure that's the technique for others. Takes me about 40 minutes to cut. Reduced from 1 hour with my first bowl and hope to get it to 25-30 max. |

Thank for your advice, But slow cutting... is it slow speed of the motor or slow to saw (to push the wood...)?

They really look great!! What finish did you use on yours? They look shiny. You will be able to get the cutting down to 20 minutes max per bowl, I promise. I've cut so many I can cut them with my eyes closed. Have you made any with only cutting the 3 outer rings to make a shorter type bowl? Gives it a different look. Also enlarge or shrink the pattern.

Betty, as Steve Good, I use Lemon oil. I like the finish it gives it and you're still able to see the grain of the wood. I'm experiencing with Scrollmania and just today, cut two bowls ( 5 1/2" width, with 1/2" wood) with four rings. Will be trying different sizes and various rings are you suggested. This bowl cutting is addictive. Thanks for the nice words. |

Kenn, been scrolling about five year, mostly portraits and name plates. Have collected numerous bowl patterns over the year but never did anything with them. Several weeks ago, I saw a posted picture of a collapsiblebasket (design by Carole Rothman) that a fellow scroller here made. It was laminated wood and made me go "WOW!" While awaitng for the magazine to arrive that contained the pattern, I figured I would start with other bowls. Been BOWLing ever since. Trust me, give it a try and you'll love it. Go slow to start, (took me an hour to cut the first one) which will enable you to better STAY on the LINE and you'll have a GREAT bowl. |
