Default scrolled wood bowl

I turned the bowl on an old wood lathe . After seeing the article cutting a candle stick with spiral blades I decided to see if I could cut a pattern in it .

I found using the spiral blades on the outer pattern worked well but left a jagged edge .

The inner pattern was cut with a straight blade .

I tried the torch method to get rid of the small edges but found I was burning the wood .

First wood turning and use of spiral blades .

It was an interesting learning project .

Thats neat Roger.Did you keep the bowl flat when scrolling it or have to hold it at an angle for the cuts? It turned out really nice and I like the design.

Very cool, Roger. I like the Greek flavor of the cuttings. I'd like to know how you did the sides too. Did you do them before you cut the bottom?

The outer rim was cut first with the table on a 30 tilt to the left .The pattern was attached to the bottom of the bowl .

Could not have cut it without a spiral blade .

The inner pattern was cut last with the pattern on the inside of the bowl and the bowl flat.

Not sure whether to paint it or spray it with a sealer .

This was originaly going to be a candy dish mounted on a stand , that's the reason for the indents in the bottom .

It cleaned up a little better. The wood was a chunk of pine .The inner pattern is from Dover Clip Art .

Thanks for the interest .

Roger
