Saving Money

Posted 08-22-2009 at 04:20 PM by Jim McDonald

I have not written in this blog nearly as frequently as I intended when I started due to vacation and back-to-school, but today I set out with renewed determinitation.

I will get to the vacation in another entry, but today's entry is a way to save a little money and help someone else in the process.

I just posted a thread to the Wood and materials section about finding some materials at the Habitat thrift store: Supplies (Deal!) and wanted to take a few minutes to expand on the topic.

Kevin Daly, our own JeiScroller, is quite prolific in his production of woodworking and quality patterns. From my e-mails with him and the tone of his postings on the board, I feel he is the kind of friend most of us would want to set on the patio with and share a meal and a couple of beverages. He recently posted his sticker shock from the wood prices at Lowe's. (Others said the same things about Home Depot and I will attest to both)

Today, I went to the Habitat for Humanity thrift store for something unreleated and found some really goods deals on lacquer and wood cut-offs. This stuff is donated by contractors from job sites and the profits fo to helping Habitat build more houses in the local area--so it is a good thing for all concerned.

In addition to my little pile of goodies, I saw everything from spray insulation to an entire set of kitchen cabinets ($700 for uppers/lowers/corner units) in there and great prices. When some contractors go in to a remodel, the owner will have them take the little bit of extra time to remove items, rather than traditional hammer and pry bar demo and take the stuff to the store. I think this a great method of recycling.

I didn't expect to find any lumber in there and there certainly isn't enough to redo a room or anything else, but if you needed one piece of moulding to finish something or if your looking a shop heater, wood or something else, please give your local Habitat shop a look.

Also, I have found some stuff in flea markets that is either stand alone "good" or can be disassembled to make some good wood. Another source for such items are Goodwill stores and thrift stores that are run by charitable organizations.

Look around, there may be some untapped markets for supplies at a lower cost and you could just be helping others.

Keep cuttin'
Jim
