Hegner, Second Look

(Draft - Content Subject To Change)

Not long after that first Hegner review, I inherited that same Hegner I reviewed, and my life pattern changed such that the Hegner was the only saw I had access to during my work week. I changed from reviewer to user, and in doing so, hours of use and experience have changed some of my perceptions and weighing of the characteristics of the Hegner in terms of strengths and weaknesses. In several areas, my opinion of the saw has improved.

The Hegner Experience

Christmas Surprise
This Christmas break I got enough days off to travel to Oklahoma to see my folks. I didnít want haul my EX all that way, so I elected to pack up the $70 Tradesman and off to Oklahoma we went.

When I got to my parentsí house and let them know that I needed a place to set up the saw, I got the surprise of my life. As it turns out, my...

Here in middle TN, there are a few of us that scroll, but this is not a bastion of scroll saw activity to say the least. To discover that Sloans Woodshop was just a half hour drive from my Murfreesboro house was an exciting discovery indeed. So, I started looking for an opportunity to make that run, and make that run I did.

As I drive down a narrow back road, the GPS notifies me that Iím getting close. As I look around, I donít see any stores, just a lot of beautiful TN country. I...

Researching Rexon

My whole introduction to scroll sawing began with the purchase of a Rexon Scroll Saw branded as a Hitachi CW-40. That specific saw felt solid/heavy, ran smooth and cut well. I loved that saw, but had to give it up (it's complicated), and in itís place I bought the Porter Cable pcb370ss, a very close cousin, to replace it. I do like it, but the Hitachi was a better saw.

As I started to dig for information on my saw, I discovered that Rexon Industrial Corp was the true manufacturer of...

Spiderman Scrolls Too (Kids and Cutting 2)

I guess to a child, the noise of a saw and the "danger" of the dancing blade and flying wood seems like a thrill. (Kind to think of it, that sort of appeals to me too.)

Wanting to share the joy of this hobby with my children, I printed out a few practice patterns and set out to give the youngest 3 an opportunity to dive in and cut some wood.

I start all the children out on patterns from...
