Cool What to Buy

I am new to the site and have been carving for five years. I want to get into scroll sawing. Any reccommendations on saws? I've looked at the Hawk and Excalibur on the internet. Are they as good as they say they are? Is it worth it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

From what I have seen on this site and others the dewalt seems to be a common saw even though mine is a delta

Here is a previous thread that might help

My Delta's a dud...what saw should I get now?

I own an Excalibur EX-30 and the short answer is yes, it's as good as they say. Other saws in this price range that you might want to check out are the Eclipse and the Hegner as well. A lot will have to do with the type of scrolling you're interested in.

What's your price range? For a little over $400 you can get the DeWalt, which will serve your needs exceedingly well. You need to ask yourself whether the brands you mentioned are worth more than twice that amount? Toi me, they're not.

Then again, you can get a basic multi-speed, easy-blade-change Black & Decker for a little over $100 if you just want to get started.

Have phun.....Carter

Default Scroll Saws

I've owned Hawks for many years. Wouldn't have any other. My Hawks have been very reliable machines. One of the things the Hawk has that I haven't seen on some of the others is a place to mount a mag light. I couldn't work without it and mounting the light off the saw would be very difficult and in the way.

I agree with Carter, it depends on how much you are willing to spend.
I own a Delta P-20 which cost @ $400. The upper end saws like the Hegner cost over $1000. I started out with a Delta ss-250 and it lasted me a little over a year,I wished I had bought my current saw from the start. You do get what you pay for.Good luck and have fun shopping.

Welcome to the group. I tried 2 saws before getting a Dewalt 788 and couldn't be happier.

My first saw was a Delta SS350 just to see if I liked the hobby. I now have the Hawk G4. It is a great saw and I have never regreted buying it.
If possible find someone near you that has the saws you are interested in and ask to try them.
