Hello again,

Here is another pic of a piece I made. Its just a cletic knot trivit. It was made out of popluar and 1/8" ply. Which leads me to a question....

I have been using ply from midwest. They are known for their wood in the R/C plane industry. So is the BB that everyone talks about using, say from sloans, better than the type I am talking about?

Sharp looking project. Top layer could pass for Oak.

Thank you Paul and good catch, the top layer is oak. It must have been the heat that made me forget...lol.

First, great job on your trivet DSH.
As to your question, that would be a definate depends, LOL. The best plywoods are "HVHC." This stands for Hardwood Veneer Hardwood Core. You can get Oak, Cherry, Maple, etc. HVHC's, these are typically quite expensive. Baltic and Finnish birch are both of this type with the cores typically made from maple. Another excellent ply goes by the tradename "Appleply" but I don't know if it's available in 1/8" thickness. Another little note, genuine baltic and finnish birch full sheets are 5' X 5' and sized in mm. Some of the box stores try to pass off some stuff as baltic birch but it is not the same wood. I have heard of some stores in Canada offering genuine baltic birch though.
I know, probably more than you wanted to know.

Jedi, thanks and you can never know to much! I will have to try to find some "real" BB ply instead of what I have been using. The ply I have been using does not stain well at all, at least for me it doesn't...lol.

Thank you Toni, I would love to find more celtic knot designs and give them a try.

ok, back to work. It is a true sign of addiction that I am checking the forum while I'm at work....LOL.

Nice job. The Celtic knot is something I have always wanted to do.
I don't think baltic birch takes stain very well at all. I have never had much luck with it. (Always looks muddy)

Thanks Rolf. I agree with you, when I stain the ply I have been using it always looks muddy. I was hoping it was just the type of wood I used, but I guess that is not the case.

I normally use pre-stain on all of my other wood working projects, that really helps with the blotching and non uniformity.

Is pre-stain the same as sanding sealer?
