Hi All, Looking for a 20" scroll saw U.K

Hi, just found this site by accident ( a few beers and the net gets bigger) Been using a scroll saw for about a year now, it's the only tool i've ever bought thats paid for it self.
I'm using a rexon 16" model, and for the past few months have been trying to find a Dewalt dw 788 in the u.k with no luck.
All i craft is childrens name plaques, but struggle with some of the longer names. I have seen some reviews that put the dewalt model at the no #1 spot, can any one advise of another model available in the uk 18"-20" that is as good.

Im not sure,but I think Hegner should be available there by you.Im a dewalt fan myself,and wouldnt trade it for any other saw,except maybe an eclipse.There must be somewhere you could latch on to a yellow saw! Good luck,let us know what you find!

Welcome to the forum

You won't find DeWalt or Eclipse machines over on this side of the pond . However, the Hegner Multicut Quick (£730 and 22" throat), the Hegner Polycut 3 (£1,200 and 19 1/2" throat) are available, as are the Diamond AF-19 (£485 and 20" throat) and the Axminster FS24 (£256 and 24" throat).

Have a look at the Hegner website, the Diamond website and the Axminster Power Tool Centre website.

If you live anywhere near Exeter, there's a massive woodwork show this weekend called "Tools 2005" organised by Axminster Power Tools. It would be worth popping along to check out the range - there'll be machines from other manufacturers as well, I'm sure.

Hi, can't believe the price differences, looks like the axminster machine will be the only option, ( polishing credit card ) ( wife wincing )
Nowhere near devon, i'm in london, would have loved to see the various saws available to uk users.
Has anyone here had any experience with an axminster scroll saw ?
Don't want to jump in as the price is so much lower than some of the other makes, ( concerns over quality )
Any users on this board in the london area ? What saw are you using ?
Where did you get it ? Any help and advice appreciated.
Any drawbacks with a scroll saw with a 24" throat for less than £260.00

I've never used an Axminster but I'd love to hear from someone who has. Especially if it's an AWFS18, which looks sooooo much like a Hegner 2 clone at about half the price.

Cabby, it seems like you're going to an awful lot of trouble and expense just to get a few more letters for your name plaques. Is there no way around this without buying another saw? I'm presuming you've tried using a narrower font for long names; have you also considered cutting the names as separate pieces, such as "Berna" - "dette"? You might even be able to cut them out as individual (possibly jigsaw) pieces which you could reassemble when the cutting is complete.

Hi Gill If you search scroll saws on the net there are so many different names, but the machines all look the same and seem to have the same specs.
Good idea about making names as jig saw type though, Thanks i will look in to that.
Problem it seems, is i sell my product on a popular sales site, i'm sure you know the one, at what i think is a low price, and want to make the items quickly, once over a certain number of letters it can add as much as half an hour to a name to make it really nice, so the 24" throat would be ideal, if the quality is ok.
Got to say i am really happy with the rexon i'm using, aftersales is spot on, my only gripe is the blade holder ( have to keep replacing ) top one, as the screw can tend to wear when doing so many inner cuts.
Once again i appreciate your help and advice.

Hi Hope that you have good luck with your Dewalt ,as there is not a lot of good saws in the UK , I also have a Rexon which is not to bad but I seem to go thou a lot of blade holders , maybe that is just the way that I use it. what sort of stuff do you do ,I also do burnings if you want any help you can get me at my address ( brian,carter@blueyonder.co.uk ) I also make patterns from photos. yours Brian

Ok people, you've confused me. If I look at the top left hand side of the post is says that caby - 44 posted in 2005. If I read Gills first post Gill mentions a woodworking meeting called Tools 2005. Are the dates correct? Or am I reading posts wrong? With me you never know.
