Default understanding what I am reading

Hello.
I have bought Jim Kape's book "Making Wooden Chess Sets ".

In reading through the book I have come up with a instruction that I do not understand.

If some one has this book or does understand this please explain it.
If you have the book what I am not seeing is on page 30 step 12. It speaks of the piece after the first side has been cup. He is referring to the horizontal cuts do not have to be cut?
It is written.
" Protect the faces. On the second side of the cut, the flat faces on the top of the piece do not need to be cut. The first cut took care of the horizontal cut. "
Help

I read it two or three times and it came to me. I was looking at in the placement of cutting.
Not the vertical placement of the cut peace.
