Default question on how to do this???!!

hi there very new to this hobby. very! guessing now to use my saw, with my only guidance so far being this site! and am very grateful so far, managed to cut out some ok shapes of fish, and cut and painted them into puzzles but that is about it.

my quesiton is how do you even start to make something like this??

Big Cats

are the patterns cut on? glued onto backboard? what bits are cut? they look amazing and id love to try my hand at some of them!

many thanks for taking time to read, alan.

Those are pretty ambitious for just starting but.
Take your time and do one cut at a time you can do it...
Cut out the black...unless otherwise stated on a pattern.
save the pattern to you computer.
print out the pattern.
apply a spray adhesive to the back of the pattern. attach to wood and have fun...

hi, sorry no i dont think i would go for this level lol!! but just wondering, if i had a piece of wood, how that pattern would appear on it. and you say cut out the black, some are dots, say around the tiger, so would i just end up with a piece of wood with lots of holes in it?

silly questions haha. anyway thanks for gettting back.

ok, sort of following that. so you would end up with a sort of wooden frame that you could lay on a board or coloured base, would look good. how do people cut out the middle bits? with just a scroll saw? sorry for daft questions but how do you cut out a middle bit without cutting a 'way in' if that makes sense?

think my next stop tomorrow is down to local library for a basics book, and start some simple projects. very addictive already is all i can say.

and many thanks again!

The middle bits are called interior cuts. After mounting the pattern

*Drill a small hole in the area to be cut out.

*Then feed the saw blade through the hole, tension the blade and cut out the area needed.

*Remove the saw blade, feed through the next hole, cut and repeat until all areas are cut.

I'll jump in on this one. You will drill your entry holes in all the blacks then cut out with your scroll saw. Then when you finished that you'll have a portrait in the wood. I mean, the slab of wood you attach the pattern to will have the black areas of the pattern cut out of it leaving the white of the pattern left ie. the wood. Then after sanding you will take another slab of wood the size of the piece you cut and attach it to the back of the piece you cut. That is usually of thinner material and some even use other materials like felt, cardstock paper, foil, arcyillic, mirror for some examples. I usually paint this piece which is called a backer piece, black unless I use some other material instead of wood. Hope this explains the process for you. On another note, the library is a great place to start looking for books on scroll sawing, I actually started that way a while back and still get some books today as refreashers.

I cover my wood with clear removable contact paper or blue tape then I spray glue on the back of the pattern. Stick it to the contact paper. Next drill a small hole appropriate for the blade you will be using. Then cut out one section at a time, usualy from the inside out.
