Ok thanks again for your help here people, and seem to remember someone saying that now i am obliged to stick up my first attempts (jokingly im sure haha). So here goes, please be gentle as it is my first attempt! I did have some problems along the way and if it is ok, i shall describe what i actually did and hopefully get some pointers of where i went wrong?? many thanks! first i got some mdf, drew a simple outline of a fish (yes it is a fish!), put sellotape over the board and simply cut. then cut the shapes of the puzzles/joint parts. sanded so smooth, applied some spray primer, left for an hour then hand-painted. left overnight, didnt account for the paint thickness and the parts barely go together! only learning still and it is my first ones so not disheartened, but how do people combat this?? cut a bit more out? heavily sand the joint areas before painting? be more careful with the amount of paint i am putting on? all of the above??? the finish doesnt look great as i have yet to put their eyes and big smiley faces on, but there you go anyway. many thanks alan. |

G'day Alan, You are of to a great start. By the colours etc, I'd say the puzzles are intended for nippers. What size blade did you use??? For these sorts of puzzles, I use a #5 blade. I also only put one light coat of colour on the inside edges, this still leaves room for the puzzle to fit nicely. Looking forward to see them with their "Smiley Faces"

Alan: You did great for a first effort (or second, third, etc.). As for painting the edges and the pieces not fitting together--everyone makes that judgement error a time or two. Looking forward to may more brags.

Looks fine, Alan, especially for a first attempt. I think you are doing exactly the right thing to practice. Keep drawing shapes from your mind onto pieces of cheap wood and then try to cut them out. The more you do, the easier if will come. Enjoy! |

I haven't even attempted this type of project, so to me this looks great. I haven't found the courage to expand my horizons yet but I'm working on it. By the way, I've seen this abbreviation many times on this forum but have never asked...what the heck is "mdy?" I know it must be a type of wood but for the life of me I can't figure out what it stand for. I'm sure when someone tells me I'll have to put my dunce cap on and stand in the corner for a while.
