Question How Do I?

Hello, I am fairly new to scroll sawing within the last year or so, and I have had some awesome patterns made for me on this great site. But I was wondering how I would make the dark shadow that I see in portraits, and in other items that make the items look like they have "depth" I can do the silhouettes, but i have noticed even some of those patterns have the"dark area's" in them.
Thanks for any advice in advance...

I beleive you are referring to the placement of a backer.
Some use a piece of 1/8" ply that has been painted black.
Some use Luan which is a less expensive material called door backing at Lowe's.
Some use Felt in Different colors.
Some use foamies..available at wally world.
Some use acid free craft paper...

hope that helps...?
