Default DW788 Table question

Just purchased a Dewalt scroll saw and have a question regarding the table. Does Dewalt put some kind of coating on the table? I have been using the saw for about a week and I noticed what looks like a laquer coating starting to flake off around the blade hole. I have tried to remove this coating using alcohol, acetone, and mineral spirits with no luck. What is the coating and how do I get it off and once off what's the best wax to use on the table?

I don't remember mine having a coating on it when I bought it. As far as the wax, I use either Johnson's paste wax or Minwax past wax. Just rub it on liberally and buff it witha a soft cloth.

Use some #0000 steel wool on the table top and then I use something called "top coat" Or is it Top Cote? Anyway it's a spray can brown label, kinda spendy, but it lasts forever. I've had this can for over 5 years. I just use it when the table starts to feel a little tacky, I use it on my band saw and my table saw as well.

The only coatings on mine were that gooey cosmoline stuff they put on it after machining it to keep it from rusting. Once that stuff is cleaned off, I use Johnsons Paste Wax on it.Im curious if you bought it new, as a refurb, or a used saw? If one of the latter , its possible some previous owner coated it witgh something.

Bought the saw new and it is only about a week old. Have posted a question on Dewalt's web site so hope they can help. The spot is about 1" to the right of the blade hole and there is definitely something there that I can scratch off with a fingernail.

Hi jobogu - if you are sure the spot is lying on the top of the table surface you could try attacking it with a hair dryer and see if heat helps to loosen it just in case its a glue or resin spill. Either that or place of clean brown paper on top of it and apply a hot iron to the paper. You may get lucky and the heat will soften it and it will be absorbed into the paper

I'd get to scratching there shouldn't be anything on the table...try Jim's ideas or use mineral spirits on it and then coat the table top and buff it out.

Jobogu, I have had my 788 for about 2 yrs. now & it had a coating of some kind on it when I got it. I just used a fine emery cloth to clean it & then waxed it. I think it was just a protective coating for storage & shipping. Mine is fine now. Good luck with your new toy. Perk

Default DW 788 Table Question

Thanks for all the responses. Got a reply to my question on the Dewalt website. They didn't say anything about a coating on the table but they are sending me a new one and a shipping label to return this one. The spot is lower than the rest of the table so it is not something that dripped onto the top it is something that coated the entire top and is flaking off.

Again, thanks for all the responses. I can see this is going to be a very helpful board. Just hope I don't have too many questions.

Hi again jobogu - glad you got sorted - and don't worry about asking too many questions - we love them!
