Default pinless blade install probem

I have an old Sears contractor 20" scroll saw.
When the jaws are tightened there is a slot in front of the jaws.
Since there is a cut-out at the top of the jaws i assume that this is for a pinned blade.
How do I install pinless blades?
On the front of the base it says for pinned or pinless blades.
Thanks...Joni

Hi Joni!
You should be able to insert the blade in the lower holder and tighten enough you can't pull it out. With the tension off, do the same in the upper holder.

The pinned blades sort of go in front, or closer to you, and hang on the obvious cupped holders and the pinless go behind and are held by the set screws.

You can do a lot with pinned blades, the limitation is that they need bigger holes for the interior cuts. Take the time to "feel" the pinless installation.

You may need to take the motor cover off, or tilt the table to really get the sense of it, but take the time and try it. On my Hitachi there is just a feel that the blade set in the the bottom holder. Lacking experience on your saw, hope this helps.

pinless blades most likely will need a couple setscrews in the blade holders to hold them. Is there a place on the holders for a setscrew? possibly one that takes an allen wrench?

Hi, Joni. I would try to contact Sears or find an alternative to find an owners manual. It seams there should be set screws for pinless blades. Maybe they were lost over the years. The pinned blades will limit your ability to cut small fret work. I had a Dremel saw with pinned blades & could not do the work that I wanted to do. So I bought a Delta Q3 & now have a DeWalt 788. It is so nice to be able to do what I am doing now. Good Luck Perk

I am going to look for the set screws they might be there. I bought it at a estate sale and have looked for an owners manual and haven't had any luck yet. If anybody has any ideas on where to look for one let me know. I appreciate the help and will let you know how it turns out. Thanks guys

joni,
Can you tighten the jaws enough to hold a pinless blade? Loosen the jaws and see if you can slide a blade in the opening then tighten the jaws.

I don`t know if this will help or not.I am also quite new to this. What I did was remove the table insert and cut my own out of plexiglass, this way I can see thru it while inserting the blade in the lower clamp.
