Default best font and size for names

I want to try my hand at making a name plaque for a friend who had a baby, what font would you suggest?

I am going to use Poiwerpoint, because I am more familiar with the program (I have corel draw but am having a tough time with it) and I want it to curve so it may be mounted on a wall.

Thanks in advance!!

Are you wanting to cut out the letters or mount the letters? Any stencil type font will work for cutouts and virtually any font can be used for letter mounting. As far as size goes, that depends. I normally fit the lettering to the pattern, it's usually around 72 point or so, sometimes bigger or smaller depending on the font.

There are lots of places with free downloadable fonts you can install. For example, 1001 Free Fonts - Download Free Fonts - Windows and Macintosh Fonts has a bunch. There are many more. Just google Free Fonts.

Any font can be scrolled for cutouts if you're a little creative about it.

I'm gonna show my dumbness here with this question but I'd like to know. For example, when you click on the font site unixpro mentioned and you find a font you want to use, how do you apply it to what you want to do with it. I have a need for this once in a while but I've never know how to use it. David

Download it - unzip with Winrar/winzip or similar - right click on the font file and select "install" That will work with most of them.

Assuming you have some flavor of Windows. Do as Ugsduck says, download and unzip the file. I don't like to install a bunch of fonts in my system -- especially if it is just something I'm trying out, or going to use only once or twice. The more fonts you have installed, the more resources they take up. If you're just wanting to try the font, or use it a couple of times, you can double-click on the font file. This will open an "example" font window. Now open the program you want to use the font in, and you should be able to access it the same as you would any other font on your system. When you're done, close your program and the "example font window".
