| I have project that I want to stain however, when putting stain on a piece of scrap wood it appears that the wood does not want to except it. The wood is Baltic Birch and the stain is made by minwax. Would like to hear any thoughts or ideas. Thanks Wa8vfo |

Wa8vfo, did you sand the wood with very fine sandpaper? When sanding wood to be stained don't go beyond 220 grit. When you sand the wood beyond that grit you burnish the wood and there is nothing for the stain to "grab" onto. Minwax also makes a stain and finish together, if you are using that it seems to just set on top of the wood and does not penetrate the wood very well. Maybe something on the wood such as wax or silicone? Wipe the wood with some mineral spirits or paint thinner.

I was going to say what Mick said...Try wiping it down with some mineral spirits before adding the stain, and I have found no need to wait for the MS to evaporate/dry before staining...I always wait for it to dry before clear coating though.

Hi there Wa8vfo. welcome to the forum. gosh, your reply's had some things I never new. I new that Baltic Birch didn't except stain well. and I also new that sanding it smooth was the way to go. but what Mick said about burnishing or going past 220 grit, was sure something I learned today. thanks for asking. I don't stain Baltic birch to offten, or even use it. but this is a good thread to learn from. welcome for sure. your new friend Evie |

There is no way Evie is older then 18!!! When you stained your wood did you let it sit for some time or did you wipe off right away? I find if I let it sit longer it starts to penetrate further. Your friend VB...
