Fran, I have three drills and one drill press and the mini drill bits (sizes 63 thru 68) fit in all except one of the drill chucks. These are very tiny and fragile bits, I've broken many of these using a hand-held drill, but broke none on the drill press. I have no idea about the fish pattern. Dan

| Fran your not beening pesty , thats what we all do here is to help one another . Those real small drill bits will fit some drills , I broke to many in my hand held drill , I would use a drill press for better luck and also use a backer board too . I know I've done been down this road a long time ago , I also brought a special drill chuck for these small bits to fit in the drill press . And I don't care , if you use these small drill bits long enough you'll break one here and there . I would also say when you order you need to order a certain size of drill bit , order plenty of the size you use the most . I usually order 30 at the least of one size when ordering , about the bits if your talking about Sloan's Woodshop this is where I ordered my first one's { They'll work } . But you'll find that you want use very many of these , in my findings I've been using a lot of the 69 , 70, & 71 , mostly the 70's as I remember . Now the fish pattern I'm not sure what issue your talking about , last issue I got was no. 34 > couldn't find it . I'm sorry if I confused you in any way , I'm trying not too ......... Marshall......

I have no problems with the press drill using the small numbered bits. Cannot find the clock you are talking about but maybe you can scan the picture and post it here. Diane

Fran, those small drill bits should work in most drill presses, on the page prior to the one you are looking at, they do sell precision pin chucks, that will work with mini bits in most drill presses as well, and yes these small drill bits are delicate, so take you time and be gentle. I to have broke them in my hand held drill but have better luck with them in a drill press. If you still are unsure about them If you do order from Sloan's Woodshop as you are refering to, just ask them when you have them on the phone, they are very nice people there and will help in any way. As for the fish plaque on the back cover of the Spring 2009 issue #34 I do see the picture of what you are talking about, but not sure where that pattern would be, you can maybe look at The Wooden Teddy Bear, Inc. they have a lot of different patterns that have fish in them. Hope this helps Bob |

francenao123 On the chuck of most drill motors it is listed 0 to 1/4", 0 to 3/8", 0 to 1/2" or 1/16" to 1/4" etc. If your chuck has the 0 to whatever size it will handle the smaller number drills. If not you will need to purchase a small pin chuck as mentioned above.

Youve already got info on the drillbits, and yes, a drill press is the best choice for them lil ones.Although my drillchuck on my press will close to zero, I still like using a pin chuck to hold the little bits. And, the reason nobodys been able to find that fish...its on the back cover, at the bottom,in the sand flee ad. I'm 99.9 % sure it is a Berry Basket pattern, although I cant find that specific one on Scrollsaw patterns - More than 1800, Many Free I believe its one of the ones in the Free bonus #4 if you buy their pattern package, which is a great deal, will keep you scrolling for years!or its in this book Wildlife Collector Plates for the Scroll Saw: Over 60 Patterns from the Berry Basket Collection I am having trouble getting my Adobe to open files right now, or I would check to see if that one definately is in there, but Im sure it is (99.9% sure anyways)

The mini drill chucks are the answer for using the small drills. One thing to note and I have no idea where I learned this is that the mini chuck will have a sweet spot. I.e., if you put a bit in the chuck and put it in the drill press, there is one spot where the bit will rotate with minimum wobble. To find it, put the chuck with bit in the press chuck and tighten, turn it on, and view the oscillation. Remove the chuck, rotate it one click left and do it again. When you find the sweet spot, mark a line on the drill chuck and the bit chuck. Whenever you use the mini bit chuck, align the marks and drill away.

I will add my 2bits here. The smaller the bit the faster you want to spin them. Also large floor model drill press may not be able to hold the smaller bits so as Marshal said you can get an adaptor from Mike. But the best thing would be to get a dremel drill presss setup or one from Micromark just my opinion. ( I don't like running my big drill press at max speed)
