Many more to come, I'm sure ![]() I was looking at all the patterns on the site. When cutting, do you cut the white, and leave the black? Or visa-versa? |

| Some of the patterns call for the white and some call for the black to be cut , some say and some don't . This is something that you'll have to ask someone or decide on you own . Sorry this not much help , but you can ask anyone here and I know that they will help you . If not send me a personal message through this site and I'll get back to you ASAP . Sure hope I've shed some light on this for you ......... and remember theirs no such thing as a stupid question when you don't know the answer .......Marshall

As Marshall said, it all depends upon the pattern. Here is a simple guide line. Look at one area (either shaded or non shaded) Follow the line all the way around that area back to where you started. If you come back to where you started following a line the whole way then that piece will fall out leaving the area next to it intact. With a little practice you will be able to tell what gets cut out and what gets left at a quick glance. The idea of scroll sawing is to end up with one piece completely intact with the design cut out. I should add a disclaimer here that this is GENERALLY the rule, but you know that rules are made to be broken so it is not always the case. Have fun and make lots of sawdust. The best teacher is experience. And remember one more thing - the only stupid question is the one that you do not ask. Everyone of us started somewhere. DG Dewalt 788 |

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I have been making some sawdust, just practicing following a line, and making square corners, and such. Thank God the scrap bin is full! |

Welcome to the scrolling site......it won't be long when you look at a pattern and know right away what to cut. I agree with the previous statements about it. Love your avatar......great shot of the dog in mid air.

Thanks WD. That's my Isabella, CD, WD, WRD. That picture was taken by a friend of mine last year in Indianapolis. She was jumping from the boat to "Save the Handler" (Me) when she passed her Junior Water Rescue test. 3 weeks later, in Wisconsin, she passed the Senior test to get her Water Rescue Dog title. Once my scrolling skills are good enough, I plan on doing that picture in wood. |

Always remember, there is no stupid questions at this site! Everyone here was a beginner at one time. I have been scrolling a long time, and I learn things from here all the time! The people here are great! Paul |

I am fairly new at this myself, but one thing I do it to look at a pattern. The color you don't want to cut will result in parts of the pattern "falling out" loose. At this stage in my development as a scroller, that's where I start. David S. |

Thanks guys. Now, on to another question. When looking at the pattern, and it looks like there is a "single" line. Do you just make a single cut along that line, or do you try to stay to the outside of the line, and cut around it? For example, on this pattern there are several single lines. Are they just saw cuts? |
