I saw the thread below about converting photos into patterns, and it seems to be full of good information. Will any of these software packages help with making patterns where there are drawing elements involved? For example, I have a pattern in mind that involves merging two pieces of clip art (rather, the lines from the clip art)? Anybody out there do this kind of thing, and can you recommend software?

Hi Sdguy, I am not sure what you mean but I use Photoshop to merge pictures together. I am not sure if that would work for you or not.

I have been looking at the Wacom website. their graphic tablet is a pen that will work with a computer. Anyway in the tips section they show how to blend pictures using the programs that come with their product. Wacom.com Alan. |

Hi Sdguy, I use Pattern Wizard to make patterns. You can upload any bmp, jpg, wmf picture in the background and easly trace your pattern on top of it. Pattern Wizard can be downloaded for free as a trial version. Very simple and easy to learn, very intuitive tool! I love it because you can easily draw curves and modify your drawing efficiently. It is not a photo software though (like paint shop pro or else), with many functionalities to merge pictures, modify them etc.

London Drugs sells the Wacom . The basic tablet is $100.00 with the pen. There is a mouse with the more expensive units . Roger |

Thanks, all. Pattern Wizard looks like what I want. Loading a picture in the background and then tracing a pattern is exactly what I want to do. Much appreciated. |

The same result can be achieved using any graphics software which supports layering, such as the Gimp and Inkscape, both of which are open source and therefore free. Simply open your graphics file, lock the layer, then create a duplicate layer on top. You can draw on the upper layer to your heart's content without affecting the image on the bottom layer. Gill
