Default need equivalent of olson #5 blade

Hi everyone,

I live in the sticks and the only scroll saw blades that are available in my area are Vermont American Tool. The pattern I am cutting calls for an Olson #5.

Which of these would be equivalent:

Item # Blade Length Width Teeth Per Inch Gauge Quantity
30412 2-3/4″ .068″ 25 .010″ 5
30414 2-3/4″ .070″ 18.5 skip tooth .014″ 5
30416 2-3/4″ .150″ 15 .015″ 5
30409 5″ .070″ 18.5 .010″ 4
30408 5″ .110″ 15 .022″ 4
30410 5″ .110″ 20 .018″ 4

Thanks, jales

Hi Jales and welcome to the board. I don't use Olson so I am not sure but why don't you give Mike a call. I live in the sticks with nothing available close by at all and Mike has always helped me a lot. He can mail the blades out to you.

What kind of Olsen? Mach blades? Crown? Skip? RT? PM? I use Olsen and interchange them with Flying Dutchman. RT #5 Olsen for RT#5 Flying Dutchman. My personal choice of late has been the precision milled blades. But tomorrow it could be something else.

Hi Jales. I wont to welcome you to the forum, sorry I don't know off hand, the mesurments you gave , buy memmory. but the one thing I will say is, ordering your blades from the free cataloges, are so much cheaper than in town ones. Dianes link is a good one, and I would guess that Mike will send you a private messaged shortly to see what you are cutting, I would like to know that too. he is good about sending some samples for you to try. and sends his blades quick. He is friendly, and helpfull. and many use his blades. if you would like to get the olson. they are found in many free cataloges, that show patterns as well. and a fun thing to get in the mail every month or 2. some of these are.
the first one is where I order mine from,

Scroll Saw Patterns Plans Books & Blades for your projects - On Sale at Scroller Ltd. Meisel Hardware Specialties The Wooden Teddy Bear, Inc. and Scroll Saw Patterns, Plans, Scrollsaw Blades, Clock Parts, Woodworking Supplies
these are just a few, that sell both Oleson. and FD blades. you can go there right now, and look at all the blades, and the blade #s, and judge for youself. also, look at many other things, that go with scrolling. they are so much cheaper to buy, but them, just a start, hope this helps, your friend Evie

Hi again, when I leave a link, I always go back to see if it still works. so I deleated one. it came up with lots of advertisments. that said you won this or that. so if that ever happens, just x out of there. ok. it is a scam. to make you buy something. sorry. your friend Evie

NObody lives in the sticks in the days of internet ordering or 800 numbers and UPS. If you have your heart set on Olson's, Sloan's Woodshop and Woodcraft both stock them and sell mail order. Mikes Workshop is a good source of Flying Dutchman blades and Ben's sells Pegas.

All the links are in the Blades section--click this link.

Happy scrolling. I've only ever found one Vermont blade I even will buy a second time and that is a 28 tooth I find on rare trips to Lowe's.

If you have a Sears nearby, they have a small selection in the power tool section that to me look like repackaged Olsons. As we all know, Sears doesn't make anything anymore, just buys under their own packaging.

Thanks everyone,

Rolf, your link was just what I was looking for.

Next question on this same topic - what does the #5 signify? Is it the width of the blade? The length of the teeth?

Thanks, jales
