Default patterns to wood

what is the professional way to use the patterns for cutting along the wood? I was using scotch tape, the paper gets loose and flops around becoming useless. should I try to use pencil and outline the pattern on the wood? How do you do it?

Hi Jayguy5000, I use spray adhesive by Duro from Walmart and attach the pattern directly to the wood and remove the remaining pattern by wiping with mineral spirits. Most of us use the spray adhesive but with several different techniques to attach the patterns. Steve

3M Super 77 is the spray adhesive of choice. I've tried a few others, but I think this is the best.

As far as applying the pattern, Stevie is right. Personally, I like to put either clear packing tape or blue painters tape over the wood, then apply the glue to the pattern and stick that to the wood. When I'm done, all I have to do is remove the tape. Others have other methods.

I also use the blue painters tape on the wood then glue the pattern on for larger items. But with very small delicate work I just glue the pattern to the wood because I have broken a vew of the smaller parts when pulling tape off them.

I use the blue masking tape and use a glue stick on the tape and then attach the pattern to it. I use plenty of glue and have not had a problem with the pattern lifting off.

For whatever it is worth. I put masking tape or painters tape to the wood after sanding. Then I glue the pattern to the tape. Then I wrap it in clear packaging tape. Hope it helps.

Jayguy5000,
If you are going to put the pattern directly on the wood, spray the adhesive ONLY on the pattern. If you spray both, it will be very difficult to remove.

Don't use Elmer's spray adhesive. I used that first and I didn't realize how much harder it is to get all of the residue off. 3M 77 only takes two wipes. Once for the pattern and again for the residue. I'm one of the oddballs, I prefer not to use the blue tape first. 1. If you have delicate pieces you may have to pry it off and 2. at $6 a roll vs. $15 a gallon for mineral spirits.

To each his own.
