| "Scrollsaw Workbook" by John Nelson is a great place to start. Also I've seen somebody recommend looking through your clip art on your computer. Typically, there are some .gifs that will work for a pattern after enlargement.

| Toni:
I have attached some simple practice patterns. These are just for practice only. Use scrap wood. Acrobat reader is required.
Think Calisthenics, or for warm up only. Cut any way you want, just discard before anyone else sees the results. Just trust me on the discard bit while you are learning.
Phil
PS: I did these on CorelDraw myself, and for use by any member of this forum for personal use.

| I first started using a saw about 6 years ago. Having not used machine saws before I found it a little intimidating. The skill you acquire with practice, but you also need to "take command" of your saw...by that I mean be confident & unafraid to make mistakes rather than feel the saw is dominanting what the final outcome will be. I suppose with anything you operate, be it a tool or a vehicle, it's the same.
Valentines designs inevitably mean heart shapes...I find hearts very difficult to do accurately as the curve needs to match on both sides. |

Now I will be crosseyed all day after looking at those patterns.
Actualy they would be kind of neat if bevel cut.

| I highly recomend the "Scrollsaw Workbook" by John Nelson. It's a training book with patterns that help build both skills and confidence.

| Toni, here's a contrary opinion....and something you can start right away. As others know from my previous postings, I've never used a scroll saw pattern.
Try some jigsaw puzzles made from greeting cards and 1/4" plywood. Glue the card to the wood and then just cut puzzle pieces. No need for a pattern. Use the color lines within the picture as your guide. Try it. It's very satisfying and always well received....and it's great for skill building!
Above all, have phun.......Carter |

| Toni,
I taught myself how to scroll saw using the "Scrollsaw Workbook" by John Nelson. I see where some others have suggested this book also. I recommend it to anyone that wants to learn "Scrollsawing". Also, Carter has a very good suggestion as always.

| Toni, looks like you have some great advice already, I wont to welcome you to are forum, sometimes you can just get a picture of what you like. and glue it to your wood. and cut away. you don't have to buy anything. it is good to pratice on anything. there is lots of free cataloges out there. with lots of patterns. you can buy, at a cheep price. and tons of books. that have many patterns in them. have fun with your new hobby.
