Exclamation Problem with my saw

This may be hard to convey this question as I'm not sure of the name of the part I'm trying to talk about!

I have the Delta 16" SM600. Probably due to the amount of blades I'm still breaking hence the often blade changing, the "blade holder screw" is stripped. (The little bolt thing that you put the hex wrench into to loosen or tighten the bottom of the blade) I cannot tighten the blade enough now because the wrench just keeps turning without tightening the bolt. So basically, I can't use the saw.

I don't know what to do? I tried looking online and can't seem to find this specific replacement part. Any suggestions? Has anyone else ever had this problem? I tried tightening with pliers, but couldn't budge it.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi skrina,if you have the parts breakdown on your saw you should be able to locate a part number from that if not the # for delta is 1-800-223-7278. They could probably help you. I could not find the sm600 at Mikes Tools http://www.mikestools.com/Woodworkin...ess-Tools.aspx If I find something on that saw I will let you know. Steve

You may try this and see if this is what you need. You can order from Mikes tools if this is it. Steve http://www.mikestools.com/download/D...-Saw-SS11A.pdf

Default Saw trouble

I have a Delta 16" also, you should be able to get a replacement bolt. Check your hex wrench, make sure that is not rounded. If it is rounded try grinding or cutting off the bad section. If it is just the bolt you should be able to get a replacement possibily at a hardware store or directly from Delta. I found your part @ www.ereplacementparts.com/delta-parts or just type in Delta scroll saw parts. Part #1246051 $1.14 GD Luck.

G'day Skrina,
I had the same problem with my Delta, a couple of times.
I just took the bolt down to the local tool store and got a replacement for a few cents.
Just make sure it's a "high Tensile" bolt.

And for future reference, I usually rough up the end of the bolt with a file or sandpaper so it "bites" the blade a little better. The bolts tend to get burnished a bit, which makes them slippery. If you rough up the end of the bolt every so often (my habit is to rough it up a bit before I sit down to saw), you don't need to crank down so hard on the bolt.

I'd actually disagree with John a bit; I'd stay away from hardened bolts (grade 5 or grade 8 here in the states). I'm not sure about the Delta, but on my G4, the bottom blade holder is alunimum...I'd be afraid of stripping out the threads on the blade holder if I used a hardened bolt. For as little as they cost, I'd get a handful of ordinary bolts (grade 2 here in the states). They are easier to rough up as well.

I have the same problem with my Delta. In my case it is the hex drive that is rounded just Dean said.
I have cut it down a couple of times.
I am thinking of trying to put a Quick Blade clamp on the bottom.
It is about a $30 clamp but it may save tons of grief.

By the way just to keep everyone in stitches...My Delta is sitting with a blade stuck in the saw. And just to make things interesting it is in upside down!

Thanks everyone. I feel a little better knowing I'm not the only one who's had this problem! I'm going to let my husband read this as I've delegated him to fixing the problem! I'm sure it could be just the wrench so I'm going to try that suggestion first.

On that type of clamp I always had problems with the screw hex hole stripping out. I used a hacksaw and cut a flat screwdriver slot into the head of the screw then just used a large screwdriver to tighten the screw. I just used a pin from some round stock I had laying around to use in the pin hole to keep the clamp from pivoting while tightening.

Skrina:

I don't know if this helps or not:

I have an older mid-range Delta which originally used a socket head screw. I upgraded to the Quick Set II so I wouldn't need the hex wrench. That part on my old saw, which may match your saw:

(Din 912, or ANSI B18.3.1M steel) M5 X 10mm Soc Hd Screw.
you may only need the grade 8.8 steel.

Industrial supply house may sell you box of 100 for a few dollars.

Delta part # 1246051 (from my parts list which is many years old)
