Default Pre stain

Hi everybody..
hope ya can help me, I looking for wood conditioner, the sort you put on soft wood before you stain it, to stop the wood going blotchy,
I was told about... MiniWax, but I can only seem to find it in the US,
can anybody tell me is there anything in the uk I can use..

I have used what is called "sanding sealer" Not sure if it can be found under that name in the UK?

Another trick is to apply a "size" of some sort. I've used a white-glue size with good results. Essentially, you take ordinary white glue and dilute it heavily with water (until it is about the consistency of skim milk). Brush it on, and let it dry.

Another option is a thin cut of shellac, something like a one-pound cut...

Default Precondition the wood !

Hi Bubba,

They sell "Boiled Linseed Oil" as the wood conditioner, of course, it don't say that on the can., but that's what it is, some companies do use different viscosities, but you just rub it on, let it it set a while, and then rub it off, just like you would do with the BLO.

When finishing woods that may blotch, I have found shellac is an excellent wood conditions. Here you can get Binsser Sanding Sealer which is a shellac based sanding sealer. Also try gel stains. They work very well on woods that may blotch.
